English speaking Mac genius

Postby Neo-Rio » Wed Jul 25, 2007 12:50 pm

My friend is having an issue with the DVD combo drive in his Mac book and wants to get it looked at at an Apple store somewhere.

Is there one in the Tokyo area that has an English speaking Mac Genius on hand?

I have had no problem at Shibuya store. You do need to book though - on-line from Apple store site - and that is all in Japanese, but when you book (I think) you can ask for an English speaker.

This is true. They have very helpful english speaking staff. Almost, I say almost everyone on the second floor speaks english and I have seen some FG's working there as well.
Just call em' up and ask for an english op.

Also they do have an english page to schedule an appointment for Shibuya. Here it is: http://concierge.apple.com/store/R119

Oh - that is new.. thanks for the link!!

An aside - just got my new non-exploding powerbook battery today. Really quick - I just applied on-line a few days ago and it turned up today.

But I digress...

it's always cool to find people using Macs. :)

GomiGirl, do you use Keitai Sync at all?
I have a 903SH and I use Keitai sync to...erm... sync!

nah - never really used a synch for my phone. Have backed it up from time to time but I tend to keep all my information on-line so device independant. I have learned the hard way that keeping everything on a small and disposable device is a sure way to lose it.

I do use the bluetooth sync to sync my crappy photos to my computer. I have the Moto Razor and it has to have the crappiest camera I have ever seen on japan keitai's. This being the under the assumption that it is basically an american phone.

GomiGirl... no worries. I was looking for some help when my screen was about dead on my powerbook and just navigated to the shibuya store in japanese and found the english button on that page. Pretty helpful if you ask me.

I suppose so, but I back up all my calendars and contacts to my mac and then it syncs them and backs them all up online. Pretty useful. When getting a new phone, I always sync it with my mac. Copying over from SIM is a pain. Especially if you have something like a contact with more than just a phone number.

You should just call Apple Japan. They have an english support line and they are really good with support calls. My DVD drive when bad in my Macbook and it took about 1 week from the day they picked it up at my house to get a replacement.

Which service do you use for online backups? I assume you sync iCal and Adress Book to your phone?

I use .mac. However, I did think that this is worth checking out for online backups...

http://mozy.com/

I use .mac and I have an 'iDisk' which is internet storage of 1GB which is like a mini FTP.

Yeh, I got mine because I host my website there and I get the iDisk and everything syncs... mail between PCs, calendars, address book - it's pretty cool. I also got it under half price because I got it with a new Mac. :)

After my old eMac did an automatic OS update, the CD/DVD drive stopped burning and playing. Looking online, it seems others have had similar problems. But, most seem to be solving their problem by buying new drives. I'd rather just go back to the pre-update OS, and not have to shell out for a new drive on an old machine. Anyone know of how to do that?

Does anyone know if I can somehow re-configure the Adobe/Morisawa fonts I have? They are the old CID PS fonts that are downloadable to one device.

Well, that one device has failed and I cannot install the fonts on any other device thanks to the copy protection.

Any suggestions on how we can get around the single installation limitation?

Thanks :wall:

Bucky, I know the guys that made the copy protection for Morisawa fonts and probably impossible to crack - however you can try to buy the licence to get them to work for you. They do ship (read sell) a dongle for the unlocking I think.

(Sorry to sound like an arsehole, but my company also has made fonts in the past and the copy protection is there to protect our livelihood and to make sure we can pay the salaries of our hardworking staff.)
