Golfer's "Nips" Joke Causes Upset

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Jul 19, 2007 6:51 pm

Daily Mail: Racist jokes leave R&A red-faced at Brown's blunders
The R&A suffered huge embarrassment on the eve of The Open at Carnoustie when one of their senior officials caused uproar with offensive and racist remarks at a prestigious dinner. Graham Brown, a member of the R&A rules committee on duty this week, made "jokes" about Japanese people all looking the same and referred to them as "Nips", followed by derogatory references to "black" caddies while making the guest speech at the Association of Golf Writers' annual function...Peter Dawson, the respected chief executive of golf's ruling body, could be seen with his head in his hands as Brown made his succession of racist comments. To add to the R&A' s embarrassment, Japanese golf equipment manufacturers Mizuno, who have a factory in Scotland, are the clubs of choice of former R&A captain Prince Andrew as well as Dawson and championship committee chairman Martin Kippax. Dawson said: "Graham Brown is certainly not a racist and he is horrified at the impression he has left and the impact of some of his remarks. "He accepts that his comments were ill-judged and he apologises unreservedly for any offence he has caused." Kippax added: "We've had it out with Graham. It was a mistake on his part. But he's a very good golfer and a valuable member of our rules of golf committee"...more...

I wonder about people like that sometimes. Do they just not get it or are they testing the waters as members of a hidden organization. He can't really be that dumb.....can he?

Sadly these opinions do exist for people who have had little contact with Asia or Japan.

The funniest/saddest comment I ever read on a BBS was a young and naive newbie on his way to japan asking, in all seriousness, if all Japanese people looked alike then if he got a girlfriend in Japan (he had heard that Japanese girls were easy  ) then how would he recognise her in a crowd.

This wasn't a troll question.. he was just that ignorant. :three:

Silly things to say at a formal dinner.

There is a street vendor in downtown Vancouver selling hot dogs off a cart. He is Japanese and he stands there with his Japanese wife selling hot dogs. I always had great admiration for them because they come to a foreign country hardly speak English to sell hot dogs on the sidewalk and yet still be happy and keep a positive attitude. What I admire most is that everytime I pass by there I see the lady with her baby on her back standing up for hours selling hot dogs, apparently never complaining. Why am I writing this? Well, I never noticed it until a Japanese person (afraid to say girl cause I know what would come next) pointed to me the handwritten menu which said "Japdog". She said all Japanese people in Vancouver are angry that a Japanese person would sell hot dogs called "Japdog". If you are in Vancouver you can see them on Burrard Street just south of Robson on the East side.

Well, I would have to guess that posts like yours would only tend to fuel or re-enforce that belief in those type of bigots. If you are just joking I stand corrected.

I'm usually quite confused when people make those kind of jokes, because they're totall un-funny to me. Not in the sense that I'm offended or angry (though I'd have good reason to), I just never get the jokes. This has actually been a little problematic in the past, when I was at jobs or something people would figure I was a P.C. killjoy. :-P

My parents simply never make racist comments, my half brother isn't caucasian (I am) and a good deal of my childhood friends aren't caucasian either. So I've never seen other ethnic groups as something weird/alien, especially not to make fun of.

I still don't get the jokes. :-)

Ditto I never got those jokes either. I thought both the jokes and the people telling them were ignorant. I grew up with a bunch of kids who came from all kinds of backgrounds so being around all kinds of people was very normal to me.

You can have so much fun with these people.

My response would have been something like:

Actually, all foreigners also look the same to the Japanese, so it's customary when you are in Japan, and seriously dating a girl, to tattoo her name on your arm so that everyone knows who you belong to and can return you to her if you get lost or go astray.

It's interesting, but my experience seems to have been the opposite of a lot of yours. Growing up with a diverse group of friends seemed to break down the taboo of making racist/prejudiced comments and jokes. It didn't matter what your background was, we could find a way to insult it. It was all in good fun, but it was almost like the exposure to hundreds of different cultures made you away of how uniquely fucked up each on was. Maybe that's just a NYC thing.

I think there is more intolerance in the world recently, esp after 9/11 seems all the racist and loons have a right to act that way.

I suppose Japadog is similar to AussieBurger although "aussie" hasn't been used as a racist negative word (except by Charles). but "jap" has.

I guess I'm in the same boat as you. I grew up in a majority-minority area where there were less people who were white than were not. We were brutal with each other, and nothing was off limits. I do think jokes based off of racial or national stereotypes can be funny at times (FG is full of them) but generally the ones that old white dudes get busted for on the regular just happen to be tired and played-out.

I'm not making any sort of statement as to their greater societal harm or anything like that. I'm just saying that some of the better jokes can be quite funny. Check out some of Lisa Lampanelli's stand-up, for example.

I'm in Vancouver now and went to that guy and had a Japadog. It was weird, mayoteriyaki hot dog. His wife wasn't there. Instead he had a very cute and energetic working holiday girl helping him out speaking very katakana English. It was fun to watch them.

I have to say that I think my Japanese friends think this way. They really dont get the problem with rascism, because they very rarely meet other races, not like when i was a kid and everyone on my street was a different colour, creed and nationality. I reckon the rascism of Japanese people is not as vicous or targetted as elsewhere, but unfortunately more ignorant.

I`m glad that takechan can bring some lightheartedness to the subject too.

A man in that position, golfer, I mean, they always say afterwards, I`m not rascist, but how the hell did the comment just slip out if you werent already thinking it. You might not think you are rascist, but the things you say might contradict you, better start attending the RA, Rascists anonymous.

Frankly I don't see what is so bad about saying Japs or Nips. My wife is Japanese and my daughter is half, so what is so bad about it. Now saying they all look alike has to be one of the most classic jokes around. The setting that this guy said it in was inappropriate, but I don't really see why anyone gets bent out of shape about this stuff.

Strangely not a few Japanese believe there is no racism in Japan.
These Japanese say there is distinction, but no discrimination in Japan!!!

I have to agree with Takechan on this one. The majority of Japanese people hate racists, although a minority may be racist in a bad way. The fact is that in western country we have gone overboard in trying to force people to be colourblind but that is just on the surface. White people, individually, are much more acists than Japanese which is why when a Black person or Asian become successful they stand out like Tiger Woods or Obama.

It was a little cold walking to work this morning and my friend who lived in London for a while and loves using cockney slang said to me...

"it's a bit pearl harbour this morning isn't it mate"

I was confused, then he explains

"bit of a nasty nip in the air"
