Japanese Internet Radio

Postby Tsuru » Thu Aug 02, 2007 2:39 pm

Are there stations out there without geo-blocking that stream *actual Japanese radio* instead of just playing pre-recorded shows consisting only of jingles and heads talking? Japanese seem to have quite a warped concept of what "internet radio" is about. And yes, I understand there is this licensing bullshit that keeps them from playing actual music, but come on... there's gotta be a station somewhere?

Ms. Tsuru is dying for some tunes here... your help is much appreciated. :)

It's 2007 Charles. We have digital technology, satellites and internet now. The last time I touched LF and HF was over ten years ago. Besides, which station broadcasts top-40 hits on HF? ;)

Surely there is a guy in his tiny apartment who hooked his FM-radio up to his broadband internet connection somewhere?

You mean to say there is "actual Japanese radio" on the dial that isn't just jingles and talking heads?

Fair point ;)

Mike Oxlong: Thanks, I'll give them a go when I get back home

Oh yeah, don't I know it. I have an expensive Sony ICF-SW100 digital tuner shortwave radio I bought in 1995.

But then, Japanese radio stuck in the 1970s (I may be generous with that date, more like they're stuck in the 1950s). Still, SW radios are cheap nowadays because people are dumping them and going with internet radio. Might be worth a try, depending on your location and the quality of propagation. Want to buy mine?

This is only tangentially related, but the P2P internet TV software

PPStream (love the branding) http://www.ppstream.com

does show various Japanese doramas and the occasional movie.

Btw, does anyone know of a good link to live J-TV?
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

Wouldn't this branding be more appropriate?

Have you tried http://www.gyao.jp? It isn't live but has lots of j-media.

Oh yeah! I just remembered this link. If I want to listen to Japanese music on internet radio, I'd go to Yahoo Japan Music Station.

You have to view it in IE (or an IE tab) and if you don't have a yahoo.co.jp account it'll try to make you log in after every 3 songs (so just sign up for an account if you don't have one).

They have some pretty good stations. There are a bunch that are artist specific, and genre specific, but they also have broader-based ones like a "Fuji Rock Festival" channell featuring bands that are playing that event.
This isn't Nam. This is Bowling. There are rules.
