Avril Lavigne Sets New Sales Record in Japan

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Aug 06, 2007 1:59 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Avril Lavigne has set another record for a foreign artist. Her third album, "The Best Damn Thing" has so far sold over a million copies which makes her the first overseas artist to register more than a million for her first three releases in Japan. Her debut album, "Let Go", sold 2 million while the follow-up, ""Under My Skin" managed a creditable 1.5 million. With that second release, Lavigne also set a record since no foreign artist up to that point had managed to produce a million-seller to match a best-selling debut. When Oricon measures the data, they include sales of the both the domestic versions and the import versions sold in Japan. In the case of "The Best Damn Thing", the ratio to date is roughly 70:30. Although Ayumi Hamasaki, Hikaru Utada and the like have managed the feat, it is rare for even a Japanese artist to manage three consecutive major hit albums from debut. Lavigne visited Japan in April to promote her record and is due to appear at the upcoming Summer Sonic event which will be held in Osaka and Tokyo. (Original Japanese article here)

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawd.

You know, I went dancing the other night and they played that damn "girlfriend" song TWICE within the span of about 15 minutes. Myself and the Thai people I was with all went, "what the fuck?"
But all the Japanese people in the place just jumped and yelled (just exactly like they did 15 minutes prior when they played the song) and kept dancing.

We left to get gin and tonics. :smoking:

Her first album sold 15 million worldwide but the second managed around 8 million. This third effort has apparently sold 3.5 million since April which is pretty good going given that CD sales have collapsed virtually everywhere. No one knows if that puts it on course to beat her second release. Oh, and she has her own manga:
