Wakkanai travels.

Postby Kagetsu » Tue Aug 07, 2007 9:19 am

Hi, new here, but have lurked for some time. I'm travlling to Wakkanai on the 5th-7th of September, and was wondering what I can do there? It was a spur of the moment decission, to visit the north most point of Japan, and maybe I bit off a little too much. I know there's the two islands (Rebun and the other I think) but thought maybe some people have had experience there.

Wakkanai? Wakaranai

Sorry, couldn't resist.

You could try sites like these:
Places to visit [in Wakkanai]
Living in Wakkanai-shi

The first one mentions a ferry service to the disputed Russian islands, just across the water - how's your Russian?

If you really like a challenge, you could try:
(a) planting a gunki (Japanese battle flag) on one of the Russian islands :nihonjin: ]A Russian viewpoint on the Kuril Islands dispute
For more details on (b), see also: What's the bag limit on J-fishermen?
Point to note: Getting the crabs in Russia can be fatal.

Good luck.

And welcome aboard.

;)

Ah, another ozzie on a lark.

Let me reassure you. Even at the remotest hamlet on the isle of Hokkaido, there will always be plenty of beer and liquor available, and a convenient gutter where you can pass out in a puddle of your own vomit.

Actually, I did think about heading over to Russia on a quick trip, but the quick trip isn't quick enough for the already quick trip to Wakkanai... One day I will, probably not this year though (or next either).

Cheers for the links, and sorry Charles, not all that keen on sleeping in the gutters. ^_^'

You might want to bone up on Debito's page on Wakkanai. Perhaps they have cleaned up their act since this information was posted.

Probably not, but a lot of Debito's places were just carryovers from the days of the USAF Air Station that was at Wakkanai.

For those interested, I arrived yesterday, and found everybody to be friendly in a very country style. What a lovely place Wakkanai is, and can't suggest enough for people to visit. I'll write up more tomorrow when I return to Tokyo... Edit: If I can with the typhoon.

Images are from everywhere (in Japan) but a few from Wakkanai.

WOW

Great photos! Especially the ones on the 1st page.

Thanks for sharing. You should put a calendar together or something.

Great composition. Pix could use a bit of photoshopping to bring them to life though.

Yes, they haven't been ultimately post processed a whole lot at this stage.
The camera is a Canon 5D, fixed with a series of either 16-35 f/2.8L, 24-70 f/2.8L or 70-200 f/2.8L.
