[/floatl]Robert Conroy has written a new book called "1945". Conroy specializes in alternate history and "1945" is based on the premise that Hirohito's surrender speech was intercepted by plotters under Defence Minister Anami and the war prolonged. In his scenario, the Russians tacitly allow Japanese troops in China to return to Japan while America is torn between using more atomic bombs or attempting to invade Kyushu. The aim of the plotters is to use remaining military and civilian force to cause enough damage to any invasion and force US politicians into a more accommodating truce. Not a great work of art but probably of interest to fans of military tactics.
But seriously, I think it would have pretty much ended the same way except Japan would look a lot more like North and South Korea, that's the only difference. Either way, the Chinese would still be lining up their soldiers like they are now for the inevitable and unavoidable payback thats waiting in the shadows for Japan by its Asian neighbors. So much for that
