Yeah, the pay in Japan does suck. Executives of major MNC's making like 20 to 30 million yen a year. My father makes more than that and he's an exec at an NGO in the US.

I've got a buddy on an expat package who's new to Tokyo. A bunch of us were sitting around talking salaries one night. One guy we know mentioned that he's getting 20 at his new job. The expat asked, "Is that a good salary in Tokyo?" We all agreed it was. He responded, "That's sad."

I wonder how much of that is due to the exchange rate. When the yen was around 130 to the British pound in 1995, 20 million was worth over 150,000 pounds. At around 240 today, it's worth just over 80,000. That's an extreme example but 80 grand would also buy you a lot less in the UK today compared with 1995. 20 million yen, on the other hand, buys you around the same in Japan as it did back then, perhaps even a little more given price deflation in a number of areas.

Although, I'd be happy if I were making 20 mil, I don't think that it's such a hot salary, even when you take buying power into account, for an exec at an MNC. I guess I'm thinking about what execs in the US make though. I remember another conversation with a guy and we were talking about how middle managers here make around 8 mil give or take. He said his assistant at HQ in the US makes that much. An executive assistant would never make 8 mil in Japan.

Nah, it's more about job security while getting ahead of the fellow competition.
