[floatr]Image[/floatr]DW: Japanese Pop Culture Finds Large Following in Germany
Japanese trends have become more and more popular with European youth. Today, German youngsters dress up as Manga-characters and idolize Japanese music bands. "I'm Queen Esther," said a young woman, whose might be compared to a futuristic disco-snow queen, if something like that existed. She's wearing a fairytale dress of silk with a hoop skirt, puffy shoulders and a corset -- everything covered with pearls and rhinestones. Her large collar is turned up, making looking to the left or right difficult, but works well with the crown. Fashion's not easy. Her coat is faux Leopard skin, completing the look. In reality, Queen Esther is Stefanie Wittman, and has a somewhat less elegant real-world vocation --- she's an employee at a car manufacturer...more...

That's funny. I was in Akiba today and I saw a couple walking the down street that just HAD to be German. The girl was in a full on Little Bo Peep costume. She looked like she was going to pass out from from wearing so much in this heat.

I was thinking the poor girl probably used her summer vacationt to come all the way from the Fatherland and live out her Japan geek fantasy by doing cosplay in Akiba. And now she's going to die from heat stroke.

I have noticed that manga and anime is HUGE in Germany. Even in smaller provincial cities they have several wellassorted mangashops with loads and loads of titles translated to German. Japanese pop, rock and goth bands also visit relatively often. It's not really a surprise that cosplay is getting popular there too.

Maybe this will be a good opportunity for the Germans to deal with their nazi past?

I wholeheartedly welcome caucasian gaijin girls' influx to Japan.
But these girls seem to be interested in only visual-kei J-guys.
not in orthodox traditional J-guys like me.
I feel sad.

Orthodox traditional? Is that some kind of code for a short pecker?
