Best Fish n' Chips in Tokyo?

Postby halfnip » Sat Aug 11, 2007 10:23 pm

In your opinion, who's got the best fish n' chips in Tokyo? I say Clubhouse in Shinjuku, but what do you all think? Just thought I'd do a quick poll as the wife was dying for fish n' chips today so we went somewhere nearby and it tasted like shiiet...

There's an Irish pub in Azabu-Jyuban that I've never been to but ought to have a decent one.

There's also a British pub in Meguro near the Black Lion, again I don't remember the name, but it's on the main street, 2F, next to a decent Indian place, that ought to do a decent one?

Two places you've never been to and whose name you can't recall probably have decent fish n' chips!?

The Meguro Tavern.. The fish and chips are ok.. Better than Dubliners', but nothing extraordinary.. Of course, I'm from the States, so maybe I don't know real fish and chips..

I've not been to ojajikun's place in Tachikawa but most fish and chips menus are fairly so-so. Even if you get good chips rather than french fries, the fish is usually something out of the freezer and then the microwave rather than a deep fat fryer. That's not necessarily inauthentic because a lot places in Britain will serve up the same stuff but it's not a patch on good fish and chips from a decent chippie.

There is a place in Shinagawa called Fish and Chips which claims to have good cod but I'm not sure it is worth the trip to find out.

It has a pretty good reputation, but as you know TIJ, so that doesn't always mean good food of any kind.

It's under the freeway about halfway out to TY Habour Brewery in Tennozu(before the turn-off to immigrations).

Anyone finds out lemme know. The best I've had (including UK) was in SF. 'Pops' place around the corner from the Edinburgh. Next to the strip club. This 60's year old chinese guy carried on his father's shop (in his 90's) which had the most massive fish fryer I've seen compared t shop size in the world! Fresh caught ling cod brought in everyday from the SF market (no frozen shite) Idaho spud chips and a crazy chinese fryer - the best on the planet. Not bad shovelling with a hooker sitting next to you either.
See you in PyonPyang!

Side question: Is cod the only fish that is used for fish 'n' chips? Are there other types of fish that can be substituted? I really like cod, but it would be interesting to know if different fish are used depending on region or tradition.

It's mainly haddock in Scotland. Cod, plaice and skate are the mainstays in England and I used to go for cod roe as a kid. We apparently got it from the same people that took tempura to Japan - the Portuguese. That's always good to throw out to Japanese friends or associates for a "we are the world" moment. If you want to spoil the mood, you can always mention that the popularity of chip shops in the UK really arose during the war because fish and potatoes weren't rationed.

I've been to several of the pub-style places mentioned so far that serve "fish and chips" and haven't been especially impressed by any of them.

The one failing they all have in common is the serving size - most places here give you a couple of little bits of fish, sometimes consisting of more batter than fish, and maybe a dozen chips (if they are real chips and not potato wedges).

To me, fish and chips is a meal, not the finger food portions they serve here.
