Twentysomethings Live Spartan Lifestyle

[floatr]Image[/floatr]The Nikkei reports (Japanese) that many young Japanese don't own a car, rarely drink and spend days off from work at home. The Nikkei conducted the survey from late June to early July and targeted people in their 20s and 30s who live within 30km of Tokyo station. The full results appear in the Nikkei Marketing Journal (not online) but the article concludes that twentysomethings are living more frugally than generally expected and have a strong interest in saving over spending. In particular, the paper notes a big change in attitudes to car ownership with only 13% of that group having a car compared with 23.6% in 2000. The paper believes that these attitudes bode ill for attempts by the state to boost consumption in the future.

Young Japanese losing interest in cars, booze

AP - Wed Aug 22, 9:37 PM ET
Young Japanese are rapidly losing interest in cars and drinking and choosing instead to save their money, a survey said Wednesday.
Young people in the world's second-largest economy, famed for its love of luxury goods, are also growing less keen on audio-video equipment, sporting goods and foreign designer brands...interest in alcohol is also fading, with many calling it a waste of money. A total of 34.4 percent of those surveyed in their 20s said they do not drink at all or drink less than once a month...more...

Shiiiet. I'd like to know where they took these surveys. And they wonder why the birth rates are so low! :p

It's hard to buy cars, av gear, expensive sporting goods, and other luxury crap when making 600yen/hour at the bento shop.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

I love your sig file...that's from the episode Pine Barrens....directed by Steve Buscemi....

It was hysterical when Paulie and Christoper found the frozen ketchup packets in the abandoned van...and Paulie gleefully said, "mix it with the relish!"

Yes, my fav episode ever. I found it equally funny when they pulled off the lining in the van and used it as a blanket. And when they started going at it because he pissed too close to the van. LOL

To stay on topic, I find it hard to believe that the % of drinking in that age bracket is down---everytime I try to stumble in to some iizakaya, I can't get in because it's crowded with chu-hai guzzling kids all the time. Oh wait, maybe they're in the 14-18 age bracket... ;)

Young Japanese men also losing interest in Porn.

I bet a lot has to do with the fact that they were being raised by the mother more than the father and that they have become more feminine throughout the years. I do not have proof for this, but there is a lot of "maza con" (mother complex) happening with the men.
