Arm-wrestling game recalled after players break arms

MSNBC.com: 7:19 p.m. ET Aug. 21, 2007
TOKYO --
Lose a game of chess to a computer, and you could bruise your ego. Lose an arm-wrestling match to a Japanese arcade machine, and you could break your arm.
Distributor Atlus Co. said Tuesday it will remove all 150 "Arm Spirit" arm wrestling machines from Japanese arcades after three players broke their arms grappling with the machine's mechanized appendage...more...

This machine reminds me of Taro's old avatar where the little moving hand devices go up and down in a repetitive motion.

It's those damn foreigners again:

"We had done careful simulations on the possibility of injuries before putting it on sale, but unexpected accidents can happen with game machines when people are too excited or fail to follow instructions," a company spokeswoman said. "But I'm afraid some foreign nationals couldn't understand the instructions well as it was written only in Japanese," she said.

I didn't know Atlus made coin operated units.....Atlus is well known for their quirky/niche RPGs video games for home consoles, such as the 'too hot for the UK' Rule of the Rose

and the various Shin Megami Tensei related games, such as Persona 3 where the characters, when not busy with their day to day high school lives, repeatedly shoot themselves in the head to release their spirit demons to fight other spirit demons.

Atlus also did the reasonably popular Trauma Center surgery games for the Nintendo DS and Wii
The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.
