I don't know, but I'm currently in negotiations with my wife over the possibility of her getting a similar one. By negotiations, I mean persistent pestering with the occasional knees-on-the-floor begging. I'll let you know how it turns out!

That tattoo must cost well over a thousand dollars I would fathom....it's an entire backpiece that wraps around her shoulder and arm....a quality piece like that can't be cheap.

Truly spectacular tattoos are expensive.

A friend of mine is an ex-yak. He has a full back tattoo that comes up over his shoulders and onto his arms, and down onto his legs. It was done by a traditional tattoo artist, I would guess one who mostly does yaks, but I haven't asked. It cost him about 1.5mil yen.

Yeah, I've been checking around and it looks like something like this would easily cost more than $2k in the States, so I imagine the sky's the limit in Japan.

Well, coming from experience.... That kind of tattoo would cost you around 2k, if done by a machine. If you have someone with lots of tradition and background do the tattoo, ie. tebori, you are probably looking at a bit more just because it takes so many sessions to do and you have to factor in the craftsmanship of it all. If she did this by tebori, it could of taken her over a year to complete and that is if she went every two or three weeks for a session.

On avarage, artists charge on large pieces, around 100~200 bucks an hour.

AND YES, that is one beautiful piece!!
