[floatl]Image[/floatl]Japan prison troubled by marijuana plants growing at exercise ground

IHT

A Japanese prison is scrambling to eradicate marijuana plants that keep sprouting up on its exercise ground, officials said Tuesday.

The marijuana plants started sprouting at Abashiri Prison on Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido about a year ago, said prison official Takeshi Okamura. He said officials plucked out [and smoked] as many as 300 marijuana plants and treated the ground last year, but several more sprouted again this year.

Prisoners reported them to the guards.

Officials believe the plants are wild.

"Apparently, somebody knew how to tell marijuana from other plants," Okamura said.

Something is very very wrong with Japanese people.

Yeah, the guards are supposed to be buying the stuff.

Looks like a shit-tsunami is coming ashore. Does this mean Freedom-35 is off, boys?

In Hokkaido, marijuana is only weeds growing spontaneously.

5 years is the maximum punishment for possession in Japan. Japanese laws are harsh, but as far as I know you don't go to jail for 5 years for any amount, though in theory it is possible. As a foreigner you do, of course, get thrown out of the country. If you are interested then check the japanese law about Cannabis (in English) here:

This is just the law, and doesn't say anything about how the law is interpreted by the courts.

Do a search herein. There have been a lot of threads on this topic. I don't feel like adding anymore than what is cited in the law reference, because whatever, it will be disputed. Suffice to say that they always quote the max, which is usually five, six, or eight years, depending on the level of the charge and transfer (note that if your grass, toot, sneeze, whatever) is received, not "found lying on the street", they can deduce a charge of transfer if they desire. This adds years and many, many Zero's to the fine on the Table of Maximum Punishments.

But as said, first offences will probably not get that much. But, it does tell you that you do not want to do dope in Japan, or that should be, you do not want to do dope in Japan and get caught!

I prefer the "do not do" part and think that is the best advice for a countery as strict as Japan, but there are and always will be those who want to push the envelope for some reason, or another. However, none of these reasons work for an excuse, when the J-people pop you. If that happens, at least you will be able to write and post some entertaining information for us, on your time in captivity and the unfairness of the police and procurators.
