I actually know this guy. He didn't go looking for the fight and it is hard to know what anybody would do if faced what he was faced with. The fight rather than flight instinct kicked in I guess. Depending on who you believe, the big guy was hassling them, this led to names of "dirty gaijin" which led to pushing (by the big guy) and then to the "excessive self defence" that landed Paul in jail.

I really don't like violence of any sort, but if you thought your girlfriend was going to be hurt by another guy, what would you do.

His writing is a bit egotistical though. But he is really bitter after the experience. Any other country they would hold you probably overnight only for a fight.

I kinda agree. It`s very easy for us as outsiders to judge or condemn the guy, but if any one of us men would be in that kind of situation, no one could possibly predict what the overall outcome would be.
If it were my wife, I`d get medieval on his ass, pure and simple, I mean...is there a law in Japan that says, you can`t defend yourself? You have to take crap from people? Yes, some people do go overboard with physical violence, but let`s be fair, had this been a Japanese on Japanese beating, it would have never made front page. Yea, I think the dude went just a tad too far, but sometimes you gotta stand your ground!

I think you might be misconstruing that comment, due to lack of context. Rollins is extremely anti-violence, and has spoken out repeatedly after his roommate was stabbed to death on the front porch of their house.

You have a real hard time shaking that old inferiority complex, don't you? Look, the war is over, you lost, try to look sincere when apologizing, maybe cry a bit, and stop being a dipshit. Is it really that difficult to get over these neurotic fears?
