Pops is coming to Japan for the first time

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Thu Sep 13, 2007 9:50 pm

So my dad is making his first trip over for about a week. He's been all over, so I don't think anything in Tokyo will be particularly shocking. Since he doesn't really like sight seeing I can't think of anything else to do but drink and eat. Any ideas?

And when I say he doesn't like sightseeing I'm serious. About the only man made thing that's ever impressed him was the Taj Mahal, so I ain't even going to try with anything in Tokyo.

Hostess bar.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

Game arcade?

Art Gallery?

Sporting Events? *sumo*, baseball etc...

Bars? Gas Panic - find pops a nice slutty girl to rub his nub.

Is he a WWII buff? Yasukuni?

He into fish? Tsukiji Fish Market?

Without knowing what your dad's hobbies or interests are it's hard to find things to do that would suit him in Tokyo.

Is he a cat person? If so, ねこぶくろ on the top floor at Tokkyu Hands in Ikebukuro is the place. It is like a host club with cats. I don't think they'll go all the way with the customers though.

Dohan in Kamekura with a cat hostess from an Ikebukuro pink salon. That would rank pretty high up on the list I imagine. If you're on a budget - then Sugamo will do just fine. Otherwise the best thing to see in Tokyo is only 3hrs away - its called Shanghai.

Since I am probably older than his dad, I see them as lovely suggestions.

A shopping trip around the Horinouchi Soaplands might also produce an equally lovely selection of memories of his Japan visit.

Do they still have that patio at the restaurant in Odaiba where you can see the harbour as you quaff German suds? Just hang out, enjoy decent brewskis, and shoot the shit. Do a bit of a walkabout later, sampling yakitori, ramen, and other simple pleasures.

I think you mean TY Habour. It is a fantastic place. Microbrewery and great food over the water. They have this weird little boat as well that goes out on sunset cruises as well - a floating bar. It is great.

I don't know how good a shape your pops is in, I've always found it exciting to walk across rainbow bridge....while in no small part because I'm rather alarmed by heights but also because the times I've done it....near the end of the day, not too far from sunset, it seems completely deserted (besides the road traffic whizzing by you)....I've done it twice (on weekdays) and each time the only people I saw on the bridge were the guards counting me go in and then leaving. It was like it was my private bridge. You can also cut under the bridge in a few spots and go to the opposite side to see the view on that side. The views are pretty good (and unencumbered by barriers for the most part) and the wind makes a bit more lively as well. It is best to start on the Tokyo side and head for Odaiba since more of the walk is downhill that way. That way you can also get something to eat at the end....going from Odaiba to Tokyo, you end the journey in an industrial park.
The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

Captain, with all your connections over at Paradise TV, I am sure you can arrange a tour for his father. I'm betting he would like that.

SJ, whats the problem? Your Dad sounds a zillion times easier to take care of in Japan than my folks.
Just lock him on your balcony with a box of happoshu, a bag of chips, and a dirty Japanese stroke mag, and tell him you'll be home after work.
Too easy mate.

What does you Dad like?

When my folks have come over, we usually spend the days just hanging out rather than hiking up to Nikko or down to Kamakura. Sitting at a coffee shop (they often have beer) in Shibuya watching the world go by can be fascinating for any first time visitor. They didn't mind Tsukiji in the morning so that's one option if you can drag yourselves out of bed. The sumo is on now so may be over by the time he gets to town but you can still go to see a training session at one of the stables. You can arrange that yourself or do it through someone like H.I.S. If he's a sports fan then check to see what else might be on. If he's a golfer then you could spend a day on a course or just take him to a driving range on the top of a building.

I found my folks were more interested in meeting people so line up your friends to turn up for dinner and drinks at strategic times. If you are going to a hostess bar, you might want to line up a girl who can speak a little English. One place you'll almost always find English speakers is a new half bar which also scores on the "this is different" scale. If you go to one in Kabukicho then you can always stumble over to the nearby batting ranges to pace yourself on the beers. Check with Gomi Girl and you can call into her place in Golden Gai for a drink too. One of the advantages of drinking until dawn is that it takes the pressure off you to find something to do during the following day.

If you take an train an hour west from Shinjuku then the restaurant Ukai Toriyama presses the right "Japaneseness" buttons for visitors - Japanese gardens outside and kimono-clad waitresses serve you in a tatami mat room. If your old man likes music then see who might be playing or just head on to a live house or check out one of the Beatles cover bands. If he doesn't like music then there's always karaoke.

An impressive range of suggestions Mully, but I say, if the old boy justs wants to sit around and drink, just get him drunk. ;)

Just across the street from the UCLA place is a very good tonkotsu ramen place. Actually it is a chain but there's only about 6 or 7 scattered around Tokyo. The one in Kabukicho is the first I ever went to.
