Any FGs following the AFL Finals from afar?

Postby kusai Jijii » Sat Sep 08, 2007 10:47 pm

I've done over 10 AFL GF days in Japan. I find Christmas a piece of cake. Couldnt give a fuck. But AFL Grand Final Day, thats the hardest day of the year for me to be in Japan. So...

Just wondering, are there any other FG expats following the AFL finals? If so, where do u watch / listen? What is your procedure for doing Grand Final Day in Japan? Who do you think will win IT? If you stream over the internet, which is your prefered coverage? And why?

I thought the AFL was essentially turned into the AFC when it merged with the NFC to form the NFL? Baka na Amerika jin desu ne.....

I know it shouldn't but Aussie rules bores me into a near coma. At least one guy I went to secondary school with plays (played?) in the AFL for Richmond and I have no idea if they still play, and no desire to find out.

My very first girlfriend, Talia, married a player for one of the WC teams, I have no idea who (forgot his name) and again, no desire to find out.

As far as I am concerned the best thing about Aussie Rules is the hot jam-filled doughnuts in the wagons outside. Sorry dude, but anyway, as you know, there are many pubs in Japan that play the Grand Final live where you can find like-minded folk.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Grand Final

To watch the game live (or slightly delayed), try the Clubhouse in Shinjuku or Quest, I think it is, in Roppongi. Ask Gomi Girl, she'd probably know where they're showing it.
Normally, I work on Grand Final day, which isn't so bad when you consider I barrack for Richmond. The last time they won one, I was still in high school (and can remember it vividly, unfortunately!!!).
I'd love to see Geelong break their drought, but I think Port is going to be very hard to beat. I listened to the Port-WC Eagles game last night and Port played with a lot of guts. I get the feeling the Pies, Roos and Hawks are just making up numbers.
The ABC is generally pretty good. But, anyone on the radio is OK, except for that twit Rex Hunt (even if he is a former Richmond player).
One thing's for sure, 2008 is going to be the Tiges' year at last!!!

I guess I should come clean on this one. I thought you were over her, so...well...should I elaborate?

Thanks Marvin - I just do happen to know where there is a viewing. The Australia Society is holding a function in conjunction with the Embassy social club at the Embassy. See the websitefor details. Price is usually really cheap and includes a beer and a meat pie (I say usually as I am not organising these events so am just relaying what has happened in previous years and what was discussed at the last meeting)

Edit - Oops - finals (Both AFL and ARL) information not on the website but there will be events. You may need to sign up for the mailing list as the numbers are limited. Membership is just ¥3,000 a year so it is really worth it just to hear what stuff is on throughout the year.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Actually, as I'm a Kansai resident, I'll be watching it down here. I have seen a few games up at Clubhouse when I've been up in Tokyo in the past. Agreed, its a pretty good place to watch AFL with plenty of other like minded AFL nuts to exhange banter with.

Anyway, "Go 'Pies!". Rocca kicked six last night, we did a number on Sydney, and look forward to taking on a depleted West Coast next week.

Oh, and yeah, if I baracked for Richmond, I wouldnt give a toss either. The merger is on the horizon.

Go Pies!

Errr...that would be something like...

"Granted, my dear chappie, I do concur that, if I had the misfortune of having being a Richmond Football Club supporter, I too, in all honesty, would be rather non-commital about the outcome of the Australia Football Leauge playoffs. After all, in all probability, the liquidators will most likely have their way with that wretched rabble of a bancrupt outfit, and the team will cease to exist in its current form by this time next year.
Heres to wishing the Collingwood Magpies onward and upward to victory!"

Or something like that. Let the onslaught begin.

No...no....no...that's fine British English. I need LA English. Something like, "Dem vatos gonna break their foots in those motherfucker's assessss(gotta drag out the s for dramatic effect). Those motherfuckers gonna be so gone next year.....some more cocaine to go with your jacuzzi, before we rob that bank and go on 2 hour televised police chase? I'm in the industry, but currently, I am a wactor (waiter-actor)."

Now that I understand.

Another option is to get Australia Network hooked up at home. The website says that they will be broadcasting the finals.

I get Australia Network over my Hikari Fibre Internet connection with 4th Media cable TV service. I used Asist to do the complete set-up. All in English and super easy though if you do it yourself it is heaps cheaper. But I didn't have the time nor the inclination to faff about with tuning in 50 channels.

Good Lord, I wish I'd known about this earlier. I used to get ABC Asia-Pacific via satellite, but the service was cut off without notice. I'll have a look at this.

Back to the footy, the Cats were awesome over the weekend. All the more reason to make me feel they'll stumble somewhere along the line, though I do hope they go all the way.

Okay, I will be charitable. When I first heard AFL I assumed Arena Football League (since it is out of season, so it would on Japan TV, just like hockey), or these guys:

So I google A(ustrialian) F(ootball) L(eague) and came to their website which is like any other sports website except it needs some translation. Like what exactly is footy tipping?

When you do, you might want to forward the info to Charles. He may want to subscribe. But, you were right, they were awesome!!!

Try Murphys Pub in Shisaibashi, they do a similiar day of it. Details via http://www.osakadingoes.com/

As a fellow of Punt Road I condemn you to hell for that last line. Captain Blood would spinning in his grave. But then watching Matthew Richardson for so many years is sure to cause dementia.

Big Sav? Fuck yeah! he used to be a big forward for my team, the Collingwood Magpies in the AFL. Hes cashing in over in Bushland, as a punter in the NFL. He got cleaned the fuck up a few weeks ago in a cheap shot - not that he was hurt too bad seeing as those fags wear sooo much padding.

His brother, Anthony, is playing as a center half forward for the Magpies - a key position - in a preliminary final which gets underway in about 10 mins.
listen in at http://www.afl.com.au

get a can in ya hand, its game on! Go 'Pies! Fuck I love my footy, and I LOVE the Magpies more than my mother!

Careful there big guy. One only needs to take a look at the player from the Buffalo Bills who just broke his spine on Sunday and could be paralyzed for the rest of his life to realize that these boys play for keeps.

But that was the reason that I asked. I saw him punting for the Eagles over the weekend. Also, keep in mind there's a BIG difference between punting in the NFL and playing in the NFL.

Yeah, KJ, but I can't see the guys in their hats pointing their fingers every time someone kicks a field goal--which was always the coolest thing about the sport. (What other North American remembers watching Australian Rules Football on ESPN at like 2 am back in the early '80s?)

Collingwood by seven points, second quater just underway.

I know someone else gives a fuck about this game, seeing as how the Collingwood Football Club is the largest sporting associatio in the southern hemisphere.

Fuck! As I write this, the Eagles got their first. Its now a point the difference.

Game on!

The problem is, it seems like the NBA, i.e. the score at any given time before the last 5 minutes has no correlation with the final score.

Anyway, explain to me the difference between a goal and a behind (are you serious?) so I can follow along.
