Postby bunga » Sun Sep 16, 2007 1:12 am

Hi, I wonder how actually Japanese do employment background check, since the strick private information law that prevent passing information about someone to strangers

Im not sure that they are passing on information are they? They are varifying information given to them by you - with your concent. Also, if you supply referees / and reference letters with contact details, wouldnt that be consenting to having the interviewer contact, say, your formal employer?

I think they can't really pass the past employee information that freely without the person permission. Maybe that is why employment certificate is really works in Japan. Anyway, better read the Japanese labor standard law and privacy law..

Im no expert, but one one thing I would stake my fucking life on is that labour standards law has absolutely no bite. Time and time again unions have filed complaints throught the labour standards office, won their 'case', had the office 'direct', 'advise', task on a 'shidou' type role in mediation etc towards the law breaking companies, only to have the companies completely ignore the ruling.
its jaw dropping.

It's been my personal experience that most places don't carry out much of a background check, and all of the places that do have always had me sign a waiver beforehand, even just for contacting past employers and such.

That does occur, but it obviously depends on the type and size of the company, along with the level of position for which you are applying.

But, obviously, you might think twice at mentioning the various labor laws and/or restrictions, etc., etc., when you are applying. That is, unless you enjoy the challenge of applying at a lot of different companies, because they will politely and intelligently answer all your inquiries on that topic and as soon as you leave, immediately file your application in the circular file beside the desk.

During the interview I said "sure, no problem, used to that by now"

During actual work I still tended to go home a lot earlier than most of the other people in the office.

My last "real job" (I work from home now, thank god) was the only place I ever worked where we had 2 sofas and a folding bed in the office, and half the employees had their own pillows and sheets in their lockers...:p
