Slacking off at work...

Postby kusai Jijii » Sun Sep 16, 2007 12:36 pm

It never ceases to amaze me how so many people I work with can be so 'isogashii' and so 'shindoi', and yet, at the same time be so fucking inefficient and unproductive.
I mean, I'm inefficient and unproductive too, but I dont walk around telling all my co-workers how busy and swamped with work I am either.
Anyway, I found this on theage.com.au. Should you have interest...

How to slack off

It's Friday so at many places, people are winding down for the weekend. Those who are lucky enough to have one.

Fridays can be good days for catching up with friends, lunch and a drink or three. And it's also a time to take it easy at work, even goof off.

Blogger Stanley Bing has some tips with 10 things to do when you don't feel like working.

Some of his ideas aren't bad. Like slipping into meetings that marginally concern you, getting together with like-minded associates in a public place and walking around with huge binders under your arm.

I could add a few of my own. Technology and hand-held devices, with games, internet access, email and instant messaging, make it a lot easier these days. And chances are you reading this at work.

Personally, I see nothing nothing wrong with doing that. With all the hours people put in these days, taking a Mental Health Day now and then can be good for the soul. It can be creative too, says Eric Weiner at the Los Angeles Times.

"Goofing off is not a waste of time - well, not always. Exhibit A: Albert Einstein. He was a world-class loafer. In 1905, he was working as a clerk at a Swiss patent office, spending a lot of time spacing out. A 'respectable federal ink pisser' is how Einstein described himself. Yet it was at work, daydreaming one day, watching a builder on a nearby rooftop, that he experienced "the happiest thought of my life" - a thought that soon blossomed into his 'special theory of relativity'."

So what are the ways you waste time at work? Any suggestions to add to the list? What are your Fridays like?

For my 20 years in Hitachi, I never "worked" a day. However, I did manage to read almost every classic in Project Gutenberg. :p

I used to work extremely hard at the "day job"... Then I figured a few things out, and now.....not so much. ;)
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Teaching for me has always been the best alternative to work.

I can be found surfing FG, and other random sites but quickly Alt Tab to a more business related window when I hear a familiar jangle of keys, foot steps, etc. It's got to be done!

I'm positioned with my back to the rest of the drones at work (probably for many good reasons). As everyone can see what I have on my monitor, I can't easily putter time away with that. I have gotten pretty good at maintaining semi-upright posture while sliding the mouse back and forth with the brain in a semi-REM:zzz:state, so I tend to leave work feeling quite well-rested.

Amen!
I found the Japanese to be the most unproductive people I have ever worked with. They would spend at least 12 hours at work... which I would say they only worked about 4-6 of those hours. The rest of the time was sitting around smoking, drinking and saying 'Otsukaresama'.

As for me... Luckily I work in a creative field where slacking off is highly tolerated. :D

I have been employed by the Japanese and am well adapted to the work ethic. Work now so facinates me, that I could literally watch it all day.

I have also been employed by the Japanese. I don't mind the work load. It's the long hours and the fucking meetings that last for 4 hours on a topic that could be summed up in 5 minutes. :wall:

Look, it's critical to debate for 3-4 hours as to whether a size 12 or 14 type font should be used on the new one page brouchure.
