Korean star Ahn pumped up for Japan clash
footballasia.com 14-Apr-2003
Korea star striker Ahn Jung-hwan is edging to put another one over old adversaries Japan when the two sides meet at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Wednesday.
The last time Korea defeated Japan was during a friendly game in Seoul on April 2000, the last of the 35 times Korea have beaten Japan in 61 outings between the two sides.

Does America have any intense international sporting rivalries like this?

NZ has Aus
Aus has the English
Scotland has the English
Ireland has the English
France has the English (everyone just loves the English)
Canada has America
Vietnam has Thailand
India has Pakistan
...etc

Used to be the USSR with the olympics. Now who do you love to beat? Or are you happy with your World Series in which all teams are American?

Ramchop makes an interesting point.. all of the other countries you mentioned have popular domestic team sports that are considered international sports (other than the olympic type events).

Rugby of all flavours, football (soccer), cricket.. hhmm

But then the US soccer teams have been doing really well of late and the showing in the rugby sevens last month in HK was creditable..

Seems that most of the big domestic sports in the US are not really played on a wider international scale.. Baseball in Japan as the big exception.

What about the Canada/US ice hockey rivalry?

Not really much rivalry since 70% of the US players are Canadian....although, my dad bucked that trend and played for the Montreal Canadiens. 8)

For you golfers, there's always the Ryder Cup... always a blast to see the Americans give Montgomery a bad time about his divorce. ;)

not one to normally cheer america, but in the world series case, its not their fault..

from what i have read, the original sponsor of the tournament was the world newspaper or press company, something like that, so the thing got named the world series, it was never meant to sound like it was a world wide competition

thatd be silly as not many countries play baseball
