Buying a Smoke Alarm

Was thinking of getting a smoke alarm for the 'mansion'.. Should I buy it myself or disturb the wa by asking the real estate company to provide it; are there regulations that require it?

If I buy it myself:
- Where?
- Any specifics I should check?

(I was just going to run to DonQ, but maybe it's one of those things that only the government sells for 200,000 yen?..)

Your mansion doesnt have one? I'd worry more about your neighbors. A house on our corner went up in flames (gladly) as it was a cockroach infested crack house with about 30 people living in it. But - damn, as long as it take the keystone crew to react it could have burnt the whole block down! All other houses I've lived in have been poured concrete. Hey what doesn't burn you will crush you!

I'm surprised the number of shit-old Japanese shacks still in Tokyo. I thought we got rid of them all during the napalm renewal project of 1945.
