Leaping Robot

Postby kurohinge1 » Tue Oct 02, 2007 12:50 pm

[SIZE="3"]Faster than a photocopier.
More powerful than a stapler.
Able to leap onto small office chairs in a single bound.
It's a slinky. It's a tamagochi. It's . . .a leaping robot

Japanese engineers at the University of Tokyo have created a robot that can leap about 50cm into the air . . . The robot is called Mowgli and it can jump thanks to artificial muscles driven by compressed air.

It can also jump down again and play football, which could be good news when the transfer window re-opens. But more practically, it could lead to robots that can be used as mechanical carers in years to come . . . more

Right then, with leaping out of the way they're free to concentrate on having Mowgli gouge at people's brains. Go Robo-Apocalypse, GO!

Can anybody tell me what would be the advantages of having a leaping robot?
Just curious???:confused:

Just a guess but the more of an armoury these things have the more they can be tuned to compensate for things we take for granted. The usual mechanics in a robot are very basic and don't react quickly when things start to go pear-shaped (like ASIMO losing balance on stairs, etc). But supplementing their normal systems with back up, fast acting and more powerful failsafes (like air-compressed "muscles") could be fine-tuned to act like a safety net for when they start to lose balance, or fail to cope with a load, etc.

That's one small step for a robot; one giant leap for robot-kind.

;)

Failsafe muscle control definitely helps me cope with my load, I'll tell you what. :smoking:

I figure the first "aware" type robots that will be commonplace will have something or other to with sex.

You've just described G-man's robot that he mentioned above.

Note to self: Be on the look-out for a worn-out, "aware" mechanical goat.
