Get ready for ROBODEX 2003 April 4-6 ...

SOCIAL ENGINEERING your way in press day...

I already getting ready for ROBODEX 2003 April 4-6 in Yokohama...the world's largest robot expo. Of course, as "reporting" member the an FG Forum you should go as "foreign press" on the press day April 2, 1-5pm to avoid the impossible-to-see-anything crush of crowds for the regular days April 4-6.

HOW TO get a free press pass to ROBODEX:
1. Have a gaijin face and ONLY speak English.
2. Use your laser printer to make a "press" meishi as a "reporter" for the FG.
3. Show up on Press Day and be ZUZUSHI/brazen.

---It has worked for me for ALL the past ROBODEX and saves the 1,500yen enterance fee. Frankly for the past 20 years, I never have paid for such Trade Shows since my blue hair and blond eyes ALWAYS gets me in free.

Saw the Micro-Bots

I saw these MicroBots demostrated on a TV preview of ROBODEX yesterday... they BARELY worked at all. The two "abilities" they seem to have were following thick pencil lines drawn on paper and following the heat of your hand IF you held it in front on it and moved SLOWLY away.

The best robot shown on the TV was the very functional vacuum cleaner robot.

Ugh, the infamous infomercial 'bot'.

Not exactly...
Actually, it was a Japanese version of the same thing. I couldn't remember the Japanese name so I used a JPEG the dread roombavac.

The product was better than the other home robots previewed because at least it does SOMETHING unlike the AIBO, Micro-Bots, et al. Going to ROBODEX is get fun because the robots shown are ALWAYS falling down, spazing out and screwing up. As a foreign 'guest', the booth bimbos choose me to help demostrate the robots. I've a a FANC robot paint my face sumi ink and a Honda robot stick it head in my crotch---of course, the tiny can of WD40 I bring just MIGHT have something to do with this.

Hell, the problem with those vacuum cleaner robots is that they require a HOUSE since they don't have enough room to operate in a typical 4-to-8 mat Japanese cell where seeing the tatami is difficult. 8)

Most have already seen this, but here are some vids from last years Robodex:

http://www.TokyoDV.com/news

There are two clips with the Sony Robot; one shows it falling down, then getting back up, navigating an obstacle course, recognizing faces, etc..

The company will exhibit the new robot at ROBODEX 2003 - Robot Dream Exposition, scheduled for April 3-6, 2003 at Pacifico Yokohama, and present the world's "smallest full-scale robot theater" at the site.

A video of the "Smallest Full-Scale Robot Theater".. (whatever that means):

They're cute little guys. They can detect light and sense obstacles.. For some reason, I always have an urge to smash, kick or destory robots. I think I'm curious of what's on the inside..

I have some other great footage of the SDR-4X, Asimo, and keitai controlled home security robots.. More clips later.. I'm tired.

Robodex 2003 Fashion Show
Doki, built by Intelligent Earth, from Scotland, is the world's first gender-aware robot. Do we really need it?

More info at the BBC site...
The artificial intelligence firm {Intelligent Earth} received its first prototype of the robot, nicknamed Doki, last week and is now mass producing the android. Initially it could be used as a receptionist-style greeting device. ... The android will recognise levels of femininity Artificial intelligence experts in Fife... which they say can scientifically determine how attractive women are to men. But they have warned that it does not work in reverse because masculine appeal to women is not as likely to be based on looks alone.
