Nice title Mulboyne!

Why did they not realize before they left port that the engine was acting funny?

Perhaps the crew had drunk an excessive amount of porter before they had left port, and because of this were unable to report that there was a problem with the port engine's deportment. We should give them our support, as this kind of accident is an ill portent for the entire shipping industry.

Reminds me of this urban legend:

This is a transcript of an actual radio conversation between a US Naval ship and Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995.

US SHIP: Please divert your course 0.5 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

CANADIAN REPLY: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

US SHIP: This is the Captain of the US Navy Ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

CANADIAN REPLY: No, I say again, divert YOUR course!

US SHIP: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS NIMITZ. WE ARE A LARGE WARSHIP OF THE US NAVY. DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW.

CANADIAN REPLY: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

It's festival season out in Ehime and people aren't exactly concentrating on their jobs.

Another example of a festival induced laspe.:)

..or something else was going on in the helm.. i was on a washington state ferry and for some reason it ran nearly full speed into the rocks!! besides delaying us for about 6hrs we found out later that the captain had invited a young <female> friend to steer the ship ... or possibly more...
See you in PyonPyang!
