The Japanese Forestry and Fisheries Ministry countered with a special release of the movie Babe, demonstrating to children that animals can be cute and delicious.

Why don't people from India criticise people that eat beef and hamburgers?

I've heard the Hindus, who for the most part don't eat meat, have a saying that goes something like this:

"No sin is attached to eating flesh or drinking wine, or gratifying the sexual urge, for these are the natural propensities of humans; but abstinence from these bears greater fruits."

That could be why they leave beef/meat eaters alone.

Hahahahhaha! Yeah, and pay Y6,000 for a friggin' steak because we'd have to be eating Kobe, Hida, or Matsuzaka beef? I like Japanese beef, but it's too damn fatty...

After Japan stopped importing US beef, the Australian beef was the only alternative... What would they do now? I suppose the Japanese can eat dog like the P.I. or Korea. :)

:D Nice one! I did laugh-out-loud at that one.

But anyone really trying to compare pork and beef to whales needs to understand that there's nothing special about the species - the issue is about the numbers.

This linked site suggests:

"The world cattle population is approx. 1,294,604,000"
and "The world pig population is approx. 857,099,000"
[and for gboothe: "The world goat population is approx. 94,266,000"]

But this second linked site suggests: "According to NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service, it is estimated that there are approximately 30,000 humpback whales worldwide"

If most populations of whales were even 1/1000th of those of catte or pigs, I'm sure no one would care about Japan whaling and would probably even encourage it so as to ensure the fish stocks were not depleted too much by certain whales!

They are classified "endangered" for a reason.

Of which, only the female half is endangered....

Having said that, I think I'll go out for a humpback burger in Roppongi tonight!

Sometimes less is more.

Edit: Oh, I just watched the video...

From the opening sequence of the video: “Can you imagine what the world would be like without these magnificent creatures?”

Yep, I can. Can you? The imagination is a beautiful thing, isn’t it? Now let’s try imagining a world without rainbows. That was fun! How about a world without alarmist political has-beens. Can you do that, Mr. Turnbull?

So why all the alarmism Mr. Turnbull? It’s almost laughable to claim that the small amount of whaling going on now will wipe out even a single species of whale. That’s why you don’t make that claim, you just hint at it. Let greenpeace make those kinds of claims, after all, they’ll say anything to protect their biggest donations cash-cow out of all their areas of activity. Yeah, pandering to the semi-educated masses for anti-whaling funding is their biggest income earner, but you probably didn’t already know that did you?

Well, you’ve scared the little schoolgirl panties off Skyver, Aisha and Kaitlin. Good work Mr. Turnbull, you’ve got more in common with Japan that you thought!

Oh, and Mr. Turnbull, if you have the time, how about explaining to Skyver, Aisha and Kaitlin that if they ever try to kill a whale then greenpeace will try to kill them first. See if they can wrap their minds around that.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Considering that the subtitles consist of black kana and kanji on a white strip along the bottom of the clip, I'm surprised that some enterprising individual hasn't produced a version with a more J-friendly set...
