Not great examples. Although they both espouse blackness, Obama may only bearly qualify as a black depending on his fathers petigree. His mother is white.

Tiger's father was part black, part native American and part white. His mother was part Thai and part Chinese. The math only lets him be black because he says so.

It goes back to the only breeding thing that was so rampant among the protest section years back. If a child was born of a white father, the child was listed as caucasian on birth certificates, regardless of the mother's race. If the father was black (pure or not), again regardless of the mother's race, the child was listed as "Negro". This has been corrected in most jurisdictions, but still comes up now and then.

I'm in Vancouver now and went to that guy and had a Japadog. It was weird, mayoteriyaki hot dog. His wife wasn't there. Instead he had a very cute and energetic working holiday girl helping him out speaking very katakana English. It was fun to watch them.

As far as I'm concerned, you can call yourself black if you pass the Century 21 test: go into a Realtor's office in America and ask to look at a property in an upper-class white neighborhood, then see if all of a sudden everything in that neighborhood is mysteriously no longer on the market. If you can make houses disappear like David Blaine, you're black.

Look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself honestly: would you want your sister to marry a realtor?

Well here in Japan, it isn't the realtors, it is the landlords that are the arseholes.

We have that problem in the States as well, but the Fair Housing Act is fairly effective with landlords. But because mortgage applications are much more complicated than rental applications, it's easier for a realtor or mortgage broker to fudge the law. Higher property ownership rates probably have something to do with it too (i.e. a lot more minority buyers trying to buy houses in the US, vs Japan).
