Iraira wrote:Been there, saw the statue. It's maybe 2.5 feet tall, and was kinda covered with a few inches of grime and soot. Very disappointing, as I was expecting this monsterous gyoza statue that I could climb atop of while gobbling down garlic loaded gyoza after gyoza.

LOL...a very clear and colorful description! Thanks for sharing :)

Gyoza statue in Utsunomiya...has anybody ever been to this city? I hear it's the gyoza mecca of Japan....they even have a gyoza matsuri apparently.

I lived in the town next to Utsunomiya for 3 years. The statue is, as Iraira mentioned, not all that interesting or well done.

The whole "city of gyouza" thing isn't really that big a deal either. The vast majority of gyouza restaurants there weren't any better or worse than anyplace else I've had them in the country, in fact most places taste almost identical.

The best gyouza I had in Utsunomiya were at a Chinese restaurant that I can't recall the name of at the moment. The owner was a winner on the iron chef TV show though.

The interesting thing for gyouza in Utsunomiya is that there are a few restaurants that sell a wide variety of gyouza, from fairly standard chinese pork and leek gyouza, to bell pepper and beef, to natto and chocolate (both separate and together).

I believe she is actually an ethnic Korean born in Japan. She starred in Moto Kare, Koukou Kouyoshi '03, and even had a small part in the TV show Densha Otoko, among other things.

She is, but she's still a citizen of Japan and therefore a legal "nihonjin" :p

Takechan, is that the Kamedas hanging out with yakuza? Dumb question I suppose, but I thought the Kamedas were more yak wannabes. Looks like they might be friends with Yaks.
Or maybe it was just a photo opportunity for both parties?

Not only Kameda's match but also all champion matches have managed by YKZ in Japan. Pro wrestling is too. Agata Mitsunori who are Oyabun of Hino-Ikka (Sumiyoshi-kai affiriate which shima is Tachikawa, Akishima, Fussa, Hino in Tokyo) and a president of [url=http://www.syukou.com/]大] (one of Sumiyoshi-kai's Uyoku). Hanabusa Goro (Yamaguchi-gumi's head exective) had managed Tatsuyoshi Joichiro's champion matchs. Ex-champion Jiro Watanabe is an executive of Kyokushin-rengo-kai (Yamaguchi-gumi affiriate). After being retired, most of boxer is invited to YKZ.

My wife had a school friend whose father was a yak(now he's deceased) and they sometimes got to go to matches(she said pro wrestling). They were asked to give flowers to the fighters(or wrestlers).

The friend's family ran an umi-no-ie at Kujikuri Beach.

I also used to teach three sons from a (very likely yak) family that ran another umi-no-ie. The mother managed the beach place and the father ran a kick boxing gym.

There seems to be some connection with the Boso area in Chiba and Black Emperor. But perhaps, they are just everywhere.

Sorry, not such an exciting story.

Kool! That's a photo of "Piss Boy" at Tamachi Station. A neighborhood association of obaachan/ladies have been lovingly dressing up the boy for the seasons for at least the past 40 years.
