Do you guys remember Hotwire?

Postby American Oyaji » Sat Oct 20, 2007 10:31 pm

Hotwire was THE P2P program back in the day before bittorrent and gnutella.

The problem was that it was server based and it turned a persons home computer into a server with the server app and with the client app, one could access it. There were trackers and it was a wild and really swinging community of file sharing. Unfortunately a lot of people used it for piracy.

I'm trying to find that software and every reference to Hotwire is bringing me up blank and no one seems to know what it is.

Do you guys remember it? (I'm not using it for piracy BTW). I'm going to use it to create a private clubhouse of sorts for my anime group. It has a message board and chat function and file sharing for naughty pictures if we want to. it uses the net, but not the web, so it can't be indexed by spiders, nor seen unless someone knows the IP. So it can't be stumbled on and you can't get in without an account.

Does anyone remember?

Do you refer to hotline?

I was a big user of this to download softwares I couldn't afford before it turned into a grotesque pronographic abortion.

There is also a similar piece of software called KDX, which you might find useful.

Heh, that reminds me of my first two years at University or so. Audiogalaxy, winMX, and hotline kind of bridged the gap between napster and bittorrent for me.

It was big on the mac not so much on windows. There used to be an incredible experimental music server back in days it was administrated by a guy named BebeLapin.
It was filled with an incredible amount of rare recordings, i wonder if it's still going on, it was an amazing place.
A coworker in Japan run a house music server, so i guess it's not totally dead.

KDX was the one I was really looking for.

Thanks a bunch! (I think Hotline was originally Mac only IIRC)
