Joan Shepherd 1983 Isuzu Ad

Joan Shepherd featured on the cover of the programme for the Nichigeki in this thread. Although her name might not be familiar to many current generation foreigners in Japan, she was ubiquitous in the 70's and married for many years to enka singer Masao Sen with whom she appeared in a number of TV commercials. She was one of the first foreign tarento on television to play the dumb gaijin schtick. She said later "It takes a very smart woman to portray an airhead and I knew exactly what I was doing!" The Japan Times had this feature on her when she finally decided to leave Japan a few years ago which tells more of her story.

Thanks for the blast-from-the-past...I used to work for Shepherd Productions in Roppongi, a tacky scam that coasted on the name of "Joan Shepherd" (but actually had no relationship). Even in the 1980s, the "Shepherd" name had enough clout to fool people into taking our tiny 3-person office seriously. :toothy:

A couple of my kids (can't remember which ones) did a bit with her and the late Leonardo Kuma of Hokkaido fame. She had just split up with Sen at that time and if just a mere portion of what she claimed is true, she took everything off him but his fundoshii and she probabkly got a lean on that as well.

She skinned that boy like a rabbit for the stew pot and we're talking about a guy that went into the marriage as a multi-millionaire and generally considered to be the richest person in show business here.

I guess he's not the first to learn how slick a blonde Las Vegas hoofer with dark roots, can be! Having said that, she was a pretty good dancer and entertainer tho! She was more than friendly, although I didn't have enough money to peaked her interest.

The settlement was in a US court which probably helped. Although her friend Corky Alexander used to write in The Weekender that reports that she had taken him to the cleaners were wildly overdone, there was a good joke in the Japanese press at the time. They said that since US settlements gave half the husband's money to the wife, Sen needed to change his name from 千][His family name "Sen" is written with "千" the character for 1,000 so wags suggested it should be "五百" or 500][/I]

Then, what happened to you? Why haven't you scored yet? I don't mean to put you downs, but being a mongoloid and having said that, you should give us your score card! If you don't have a blonde batting average, we'll just let it pass.
