Oh, I'm sorry I did not mean that I should not be harrassed because I am a fucked gaijin. My point was that if they get rid of the illegal sex workers I think the solicitation on the streets would diminish as Japanese girls do not seem to be willing to do that. From what I see the vast majority of those doing the solicitation on the streets are foreigners and even the workers inside are foreigners. Japanese girl seem to use the Internet or phone lines to get customers not on the street.

speaking of street hawker harassment, usually, when I got the "massagee" solicitations, it usually came from an asian girl or a (usually) causcasian looking foreigner. the african guys were mostly trying to get people to come into various regular bars/clubs. I will admit though, those guys are reeeeeally aggressive. and if you "do" decide to try one of their bars, the "insist" on taking you in like cattle to the slaughter. yeah, I know that's how they get paid, but it's a turn off. it's also hard to avoid them in the daytime in certain areas of harajuku and shinjuku. geez, really aggressive. now I rarely even frequent areas that have that much hawker activity, let the FGs fresh off the boat deal with it.

This is called the worlds oldest profession and for good reason.. for as long as people have had sex, there have been people willing to pay for it and thus, those willing to sell it... What is criminal is the victimization associated with it and punishing the prostitutes is easy but doesn't get to the source of the issue.

Personally, I think that legalisation is a solution, albeit problematic, but more successful than the punishment of the prositutes themselves. Punishing the buyers doesn't work either as it is not applied equally.

If it is legal then it takes away the profit motive of organised crime that goes hand in hand with prostitution. Also, it allows prostitutes to have more control in their lives. We are never going to stop prostitution, so why not ensure that it is done safely and openly?

I believe that legalisation is not the way to go; in Holland the number of prostitutes increased dramatically. When such a profession becomes more comfortable it actually creates vocations. More and more young girls could see it as an easy way to make some extra cash. I don't think that this profession should be valorized, the number of willing, happy prostitutes is in my mind heavily outweighed by the suffering of the majority of them.
I think that you have to start somewhere, punishing the buyers is a good way to show them that buying a woman's body, without any regard to the psychological damage they are inflicting IS a crime. I don't care that some blokes just aren't getting sex, they can use their hands.

I agree, however I do not believe that this is an equal relationship. On one side men use prostitutes for sex, clearly stating that the life of a woman isn't as important as their penis' needs, and on the other, desperate women who can't see what other alternatives they have are comforted in the idea that becoming a prostitute is an option like others, partly thanks to people like us who will stand there and say "Go on, it's your freedom! I don't have a problem with it if that's what you want to do!", while we ourselves would be horrified at the idea of falling so low.
