To try to discourage underage drinking, the liquor merchants association planned in 1995 to eliminate all outdoor alcohol vending machines by May 2000, but ultimately failed. As of April 2002, there were still 64,000 vending machines selling liquor outdoors in Japan...

Where's the cheapest you can get a standard can of beer for? Certainly not at a vending machine.

The cheapest I've seen is at the local COOP supermarket. 168 yen (brands vary depending on what they have on special at the time)
