More Int'l Flights to Regional Airports

Postby L S » Wed Nov 07, 2007 3:26 pm

TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - Japan plans to open up its regional airports to foreign airlines in an effort to increase the flow of tourists from Asia and enhance local economies, the Transport Ministry said Friday.
Japan will ease restrictions on air routes, allowing foreign carriers to launch services quickly without having to negotiate landing rights, the ministry said in a statement.....Japan has set a goal of attracting 10 million foreign visitors by 2010, nearly double the figure in 2003. Last year a record 8.1 million foreigners visited Japan, according to the government.....Japan hopes to channel tourists from the customary hubs of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya to outlying places such as Sapporo in the north and Fukuoka in the south to improve regional economies.

About fucking time, I love when half the cost of my trip to visit the in-laws is the flight from Narita into Kyushu.

While this may be convenient for some J folks, I somehow think that there is not a large number of international travelers saying 'If I can't get a direct flight to Fukuoka, then fuck it I'm not going to Japan'...although this might help Hokkaido attract skiers from other asian countries....for that audience, anything that gets them to slopes faster is generally greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing...

Yep, make it easier for people to come to Japan so they can be treated like criminals at immigration.

You like visiting your in-laws?

I think we might actually use a flight from Europe or the Middle East to Sapporo... I've been aching to visit Hokkaido.

Hokkaido is awesome. If it weren't for my wife ("I hate the cold, wahhhh"), I'd move there.

And if they actually had some jobs there..
But really a great place nonetheless. Good food, people are nice, and the great central heating system!

I think this change in strategy is as much to try to open interest in creating business opportunities in the areas by the regional airports as it is tourism. Probably more so.
The national and local goverments will have to create other incentives in these regions to try to make the business flourish though. Int'l flights will help, but can't succeed in a vacuum.
