I think it's the 'bicycle-sprocket/chain-hookage-defending' fashion statement.

Baggy pants + mountain bike sprocket = shredded pant leg.

I did the same thing when a mountain bike was my only mode of transportation. The mama-san bikes are different though; the sprocket is covered. The mountain bike wreaks havoc on pants.

"The members of the New England gang known as the Brotherhood of Struggle are predominately black, male, and are known to walk with their belt buckles open, turned to the right, wear their right pants leg rolled up, or have a handkerchief tied around their right arm or leg."

This was a black fad a few years ago...

You're probably right, Vince. Why would Japanese fashion have ANY practical purpose?

When faced with the difficult decision of straight teeth or Louis Vuitton bag, old Louie wins 9 times out of 10..

Of course, I guess both choices are for appearance.. but there IS a slight health factor when it comes to teeth.

Mo' "bizzare co-incidence"

Here'z a mo' bizzare co-incidence that happened to me in Shin-Yokohama station today. I was checking the battery level in my digi-cam and I took this picture by mistake. 8) Image

Note that both these girls both had their right pant leg pulled up to show off their daikonashi.

daikonashi?

I know what a daikon radish is, and I know what ashi is.

But why are they daikonashi?

Ok. Here's your basic daikon

Thick at the top tapering down uniformly to a point.

Now here's your basic fat ashi

Now extrapolate...

Isn't it another way to insult girls with badly shaped ankles?

(Of course I have very slender ankles!!)

Yes, it's intended as an insult. Comparing women's body parts to vegatables is part of an old RAKUGO spiel from the EDO period. By co-incidence I saw this exact same RAKUGO being performed on last Saturday night's TV. It had the audience rolling in the aisles. Well they do say the oldies are the goodies :D

(and of course *I* have ever confidence in the excellent physiology of your ankles :D )

Thick ankles (and stumpy bowed legs) are the bane of Japanese beauty. Traditionally Japanese narrow ankles are considered more beautiful, but also an outward sign of.. ur, ummmm, , the quality of a women's equipment. Dang, I should know all this "traditional" stuff... I've been hanging out with randy obaasan too much.
