MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan — Four Marines remained in confinement here Friday despite a decision by Japanese authorities to not press charges for an alleged gang-rape.

There was mixed reaction Friday on the base and on the streets of Hiroshima to the decision Thursday by Japanese prosecutors to drop the case against the four Marines.

The men, who have been in U.S. custody at the air base since last month, remain in custody in accordance with the Uniform Code of Military Justice, said Maj. Guillermo Canedo, who declined to elaborate.

Also, a midnight curfew will remain in place indefinitely for all active-duty servicemembers at the air station, Canedo said... more

I don't think it takes a wild imagination to figure out why they to confined to base. My guess is that the locals have a bounty on their nards. Additionally, I doubt the base commander was really impressed with there actions.

A Japanese woman testified Thursday that four Iwakuni Marines kidnapped and took turns raping her in a van during a night out in Hiroshima in October.

The 20-year-old woman was the first witness in a pretrial investigation into whether the men will face courts-martial for the alleged gang rape.

Gunny Sgt. Carl M. Anderson, Gunny Sgt. Jarvis D. Raynor, Sgt. Lanaeus J. Braswell and Lance Cpl. Larry A. Dean are charged with various crimes including rape, conspiracy and kidnapping and have been confined on base since the allegations surfaced in October.

A defense attorney said during the opening day of the Article 32 hearing that the alleged victim admitted to having consensual sex with one of the Marines on Oct. 14 after lying repeatedly about it to Japanese police and prosecutors.

The woman said she met two of the Marines — Braswell and Anderson — at Club Chinatown, a dance club in Hiroshima, early in the morning of Oct. 14.

The woman testified Thursday that she had been drinking alcohol and after 20 to 30 minutes of conversation with Braswell, the two left the club to have sex in a vehicle.

The records show that in an interview with Japanese police, she told investigators: “I never had sex with someone right after we began dating. More so, I can’t imagine having sex with someone after just meeting them.”
