With dolphin harvesting in Japan there is some irony in this news report. So we can take it that dolphins of any color other than pink are fair game?

I wonder if there are any Kitty-chan dolphins?

I love dog(I had kept 3 dogs so far) but dont try to deny Korean dog eating culture(In part of Japan too, dog had been eaten.). Needless to say, the two are problems of different dimensions. It is the same as case of dolphin and whale.
These bitches dont seem to have some intelligence to understand such easy argument. Distinguish between private and public, or between emotion and reason!!!!
I think even dolphins understand what I say.

Actually on youtube, there's a guy with a couple accounts (koreankilldogs, HelpKangaroo, etc. - basically the same guy) that's posting links to his films on every single comment section for any footage of the incident. There's also a guy with multiple accounts that keeps posting the same argument (in a 20 post string repeatedly) involving a combination of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, fake pictures in Iris Chang's "The Rape of Nanking," and a conspiracy theory claiming that the US government caused 9/11 to kill 22 Japanese businessmen in the World Trade Center. Good times. :spin:

I think this post sums it up perfectly. This is not about culture, morality or anything that noble, this is about rural people's livelihoods and their inability to find another way to take care of their families. This business is in all probability heavily subsidized by the J-gubmint and in the end the same will happen that has happened to the whaling industry. They will keep catching it anyway as it keeps people in their jobs in the name of "tradition", and the meat ends up frozen in some warehouse as nobody will even feed that shit to their dog.

Isn't the free market great?

Anyway, here's my contribution... not sure f it has been posted already, but here it is:

Japanese arrest warrant issued for Hayden Panettiere
Last abc15.com / 2:41 pm
Hayden Panettiere is a wanted woman - Japanese authorities have issued an arrest warrant for the Heroes star.
The 18-year-old actress violently clashed with Japanese fishermen recently as she tried to save hundreds of dolphins from slaughter.
The star was almost stabbed by fishing hooks aimed at the protestors during the protest....

I doubt she wrote the article..

If she were a 'real' activist, she would wait until after November 20th then return to Japan to be arrested..

Telegraph: Japan issues arrest warrant for Aussie star Isabel Lucas
JAPANESE police have issued an arrest warrant for ex-Home and Away star Isabel Lucas for her role in a high-profile protest against the slaughter of pilot whales. Emotional footage of young protesters, including Lucas, made worldwide headlines last week - timed to draw attention to the controversial whaling season which officially began yesterday...Now Lucas and five others, including Heroes actress Hayden Panettierre, have been charged with "interfering with international commerce" after paddling across nets set to herd dolphins and whales to their death near the Japanese village of Taiji.

If these "stars" really want to cause problems for Japan and the whaling industry, they'd come here and let themselves get arrested. That would get a ton of media attention back home, and really make Japan look stupid.

These environmentalist should insist
"Hunt and eat whale or dolphin not to destruct the whole ecosystem." etc.
If they insist like that, not a few Japanese(I too) will support their activities.
But these dudes insist protecting ONLY whale or dolphin because of its high IQ and human friends etc (these fucking "reasons" are argument of different dimensions though).
What the fuck is this?? Huh??:devil2:
These environmentalists are the same as members of psycho perverted cult.
We Japanese need not to deal with environmetal maddness seriously.

The problem is that years of eating large quantities of mercury-contaminated fish has lead to a buildup of mercury in the dolphins' bodies. Whales that eat fish have the same problem, and so would humans if we ate that much fish.

Putting food on the market that is known to have a relatively high concentrations of mercury does not seem a wise thing to do. If your country was starving or facing severe food shortages then it could perhaps be justified, but not in Japan at the current time.

Regardless of how you feel about herding harmless creatures into a cove and then turning the water red with their blood...eating their undoubtedly contaminated meat is nothing short of stupid.

Just remember Taqui, the current demographics show that the last Japanese person will die in about 3300, so if the whales can hold out that long, they will definitely have a major party in 1292 years, 1 month, and 10 days (I'm sure China, Korea, etc will be invited) Remember that, Taqui! Maybe with all the mercury-tainted whale meat, the end will come even faster....remember Taqui, remember. All you will have is memories to remember, as there really is no future for you...tick tock tick tock Taqui.
As for "members of psycho perverted cult", are you talking about J. Red Army, Aum, Uyoku, or Lifespace?

Who else had a lot of success this weekend nailing J-girls?

Sorry for derailing (de-whaling?) the topic slightly, but I'd not heard the bit about the year 3300, do you have a link to those stats?

Just to clarify, I'm not challenging, I'd just be interested in reading the source. :D

Yeah, I figured that I would need to start digging around Google for that source.

A quick search found (not sure how legit this one is)
http://www.greyswan.net/
which puts the extinction at 2600 AD (+/- a few hundred years).

From some Korean guy from the Institute of Global Economics (perhaps a group run out of Pyonyang?)
http://72.14.235.104/search?q=cache:4vlo856bp48J:www.igenet.com/korean/bbs/download.php%3Fbbs_code%3Dutil_bbs7%26bbs_number%3D65%26fld%3Dfileurl+%22last+japanese+person%22&hl=ja&ct=clnk&cd=14&gl=jp

From the Center of Economy and Business at Columbia University:
http://72.14.235.104/search?q=cache:M1BUdhaptf8J:digitalcommons.libraries.columbia.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi%3Farticle%3D1016%26context%3Djapan_event+%22last+japanese+person%22&hl=ja&ct=clnk&cd=19&gl=jp

Probably the last one is the most informative about the whole J population demographic mess. It puts the birth of the last Japanese person in 2800, long after the Japanese pension system is dead. The articles are quite lengthy, so if you're just looking for the nut and bolt, in each case just search for "last Japanese person" in each article.

I remember reading it about 2-3 years ago on some major US news site, but I can't remember which one, and it's almost 1am....got work tomorrow.

The first two are kind of useless, the Korean one with too much politics mixed in to make me comfortable relying on it, and the other one being mostly a one line quote on the subject with no sources attributed+some vague math.

The Columbia one is interesting though, so cheers. That will really ruin the whole cyber-punk genre though won't it. They all envision this bleak future run by Japanese corporations ala the Blade Runner movie and such :D

I actually tried searching for something myself before posting the reply, but I think the original number (3300) kept throwing the search off and sending me on weird unrelated tangents, some of the highlights of which(in case you're bored like me) were:

I still find it funny that so many people care whether or not the Japanese eat dolphins. No one has yet explained to me why it's wrong to eat an animal if it's not endangered.

Skip the mecury-laced meat arguement because I get it.

Skip the Japanese-also-harvest-endangered-species-of-whale argument because I get that one too.

Can someone who is not anti-meat eating in general tell me why it's wrong to hunt a non-endagered cetacean?

I have no problem eating meat. Yakiniku is just about my favorite food period, and I BBQ steak every chance I get from Spring to Autumn.

Well, if you'd like to increase your mercury levels you are more than welcome to! "If [you] would rather die [you] had better do it, and decrease the surplus population." ;)

As far as I understand it though most of the dolphins that they slaughter are not eaten, the meat is destroyed or dumped in a landfill. I have no problem at all with the killing of (non-endangered) animals for food, but killing for the sake of killing bothers me. In human terms I would say it is the same as the difference between killing for self defense and going on a rampage because you're pissed off about something. One is generally justifiable, the other isn't.

If that's true that is fucked up. But then why do they slaughter them? If it's government subsidies, why not just give them money NOT to kill dolphins?

Again, you're bringing in another reason why this dolphin kill is bad. However, most people in the west seem to have a moral aversion to the Japanese hunting dolphins and whales. That is what I don't get.

Hey Jerk, you have a smart brain.

Mercury problem is the one that human better not eat, not the one human must not eat. Altough most of Japanese understand not only whale or dolphin but also tuna, bonito and mackerel contain prenty of mercury, we dont mind eating tuna, bonito, mackerel.
As I said before, if "environmentalists" are not cult believers but real environmentalists, they should change their opinion more rationally.
"Hunt and eat not to destruct the whole ecosystem", etc.
Well, they will not change their way, though.

If these "environmentalists" raid into J-whale ship in the next time, J-fishermman better beat them to death. I wholeheartedly think so.

The Japanese have totally overfished their waters yet refuse to put proper controls on their fishermen. (Next to farmers fishermen are probably next in line as far as political clout goes.) They now see dolphins as competition for the remaining fish so they kill 'em off. Nice!

Samurai_Jerk wrote:Again, you're bringing in another reason why this dolphin kill is bad. However, most people in the west seem to have a moral aversion to the Japanese hunting dolphins and whales. That is what I don't get.

For a lot of people I think this has a lot to do with the way that the dolphins and whales are killed more than the killing itself. Dolphins and whales are large-brained and very intelligent. They are killed in very painful, panic-inducing, inhumane ways. In the case of the whales it can take hours to finish a kill, and the dolphins are herded into a shallow bay and slaughtered.

Japan does not need the meat as a food source, the meat is unhealthy to eat anyway, the industry is not economically important, and the animals are killed badly. I don't see much good about this myself.
