Japanese Restauranteur Arrested In NY For Trying To Bribe Health Inspector

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:23 pm

BusinessWeek: NYC restaurant owner faces bribe charge
A Japanese restaurant owner was arrested Wednesday, accused of trying to bribe a city investigator working undercover as a health inspector, authorities said. Kazuo Mitsuya, 66, who runs Naniwa Restaurant of Japan in Manhattan, faces a felony charge of third-degree bribery. He's expected to be arraigned after he's officially charged, a spokesman with the city Department of Investigation said. Mitsuya originally attempted to pay off a health inspector, the DOI said. But the inspector reported the incident and an undercover officer was sent in, city investigators said. Authorities said Mitsuya tried to offer the undercover officer $200 to ignore summonses issued for health code violations that included a roach carcass in a sugar bin, uncovered meat and employees preparing sushi without protective gloves.

"Preparing sushi without protective glove". This sounds like the law Toronto health inspectors tried to impose on sushi joints in Toronto forcing them to only use frozen fish. That plan was shelved when people complained. Or the Montreal health inspectors telling Chinese barbeque places in Chinatown that the roast duck and pigs hanging in the window must be refrigerated. That plan was called harrasment and was also shelved.

I also like my roach carcasses pre-sweetened, so I see no problem here.

You know what? I've never thought about the fact that sushi is prepared by hand. touching the food.

I was to busy eating it.

Well, seeing as he has a big bucket full of water beside him when he makes the sushi, I'll consider those hands washed.

I New York a few years ago when eating at a Japanese restaurant and all staff being young Japanese girls knowing there is no working holiday treaty between the US and Japan, I asked the owner how come he can find so many girls to work there? He said "all illegal". This may be a reason why so many Japanese people get deported from the U.S. Anyway, not really pertinent to this thread but i thought before the whole thing gets into "finger penetrating ass before making sushi" thing that I at least bring the subject back to "girls".

Jack, I think that is pretty common in most Asian businesses owned by a proprietor of a certain ethnicity.

I've known both Korean and Japanese businesses that hired college kids of the same ethnicity to work and paid them under the table here in Columbus.

Japanese girls work at Japanese places, Korean's work at Korean places.

I've noticed that Japanese girls seem to work more than Korean girls.

I've been thinking about this story for a bit, and I think I discovered what bugs me about it.

Authorities said Mitsuya tried to offer the undercover officer $200 to ignore summonses issued for health code violations that included a roach carcass in a sugar bin, uncovered meat and employees preparing sushi without protective gloves.

$200? Everyone knows you can't buy off an inspector that cheaply.

It's pretty common for college kids period. Those of us who had to rely on a lot of financial aid and scholarships anyway.

I wasn't allowed to earn more than $2000 a year without losing a substantial portion of aid package.

That's because the Koreans studying in the US tend to be loaded.

I usually go to the sushi restaurants where I can see the dudes wash their hands, as far as I`m concerned, they do a good job, the place has a great reputation, so far no one(as far as I know) has succumbed to Salmonella poisoning.
So that means, I should be in the clear!
By the way, (off the recorded)do you think there might be a market for caramelized cockroaches?:-|

If you can find some people who want to go beyond eating inago, you might be in for a windfall. Went to a few entomology conferences a few lifetimes ago, and the spread at the reception was often very creepy crawly. That is the way entomologists act macho, and I gave up after feeling my throat close up while trying the beetle half-shell (think oyster, but gummier). No wonder I can't deal with natto.
But, to get back on track, find some people who study bugs, they'd probably be into it, let the word spread, eventually, the Skippy Peanut Butter Co. Ltd., will buy you out for a tidy amount (of which I demand 20%...I'm American, don't think for a minute I won't sue.).
