The "random and calculated" rape of a woman in central Hamilton last week was made up by a Japanese woman attempting to get attention from her ex-boyfriend. Police said they were manipulated and used by the 21-year-old woman, who claimed she was dragged into a van and raped by a group of men in Ward Ln last Wednesday night. Chie Ikee, 21, of Matamata, appeared in the Hamilton District Court yesterday afternoon and admitted one charge of making a false complaint. Ikee said she was distraught at the end of her relationship and she was trying to get sympathy and attention from her ex-partner. Despite Ikee's plan to return to Japan on Monday, Judge Barry Morris convicted her and imposed a one-year suspended sentence...Outside court, Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Page, who led the investigation, said police had been "manipulated and used" by Ikee and the other false complainant for their own benefit. "It's just a slap in the face of all the women who have had to endure these sort of attacks," Mr Page said. "The impact is massive. If I was the Judge, I think I'd order her to reimburse the cost in wasted police-hours to the NZ taxpayers via their treasury department, AND to apologise to any citizens adversley affected by the investigation of her bogus crime.

The judge probably suspended the sentence for no merit to society. She was leaving the country and would not be able to return. She had no money, so collection of a major fine and or re-imbursement of costs would in itself, inccur costs and any imprisonment would cost money. In other words, there would be no benefit to the people of NZ to pursue the case. I think they rightfully felt it that it would be a waste of their tax money (read IPG's beer money) to prosecute the hook, when they could kick her out of country with a no return provision at no further cost. IMNSHO.....

Even if you don't get away with it the punishment is likely to be pretty weak.

But Gboothe is right - she was leaving the country and was flat broke so there wasn't much point wasting anymore of my beer-dollars trying to get the money back off her. I just hope that enough press picks up the story and shames her. It is disgusting to use the police and such a serious issue to this effect.

When in a previous thread I got heat because I said "those girls desrve to get raped" I said I did not believe the rape story. Here it is boyz and girls. This happens all the time. I don't believe too many rape stories coming from Japanese girls.

Apparently, false reports are very common. From wikipedia:

"In 1994, Dr. Eugene J. Kanin of Purdue University investigated the incidences, in one small urban community, of false rape allegations made to the police between 1978 and 1987. Unlike those in many larger jurisdictions, this police department had the resources to "seriously record and pursue to closure all rape complaints, regardless of their merits". The falseness of the allegations was not decided by the police, or by Dr. Kanin; they were "... declared false only because the complainant admitted they are false." The number of false rape allegations in the studied period was 45; this was 41% of the 109 total complaints filed in this period. In Dr. Kanin's research, the complainants who made false allegations did so (by their own statements during recantation) for one or some combination of three major reasons:
providing an alibi. Dr. Kanin's report describes a woman who got into a bar fight and, fearing that this might prevent her from regaining custody of her children, filed a rape complaint to account for her injuries.
a means of gaining revenge. Dr. Kanin's report describes an 18 year old woman who engages in consexual sex with a boarder staying at her house. After he refuses to continue their relationship she accuses him of rape.

Unlike the city police in the other study, the university police did not use polygraph examinations and the investigations were all performed by female officers. This figure also forms a lower estimate of the total number of false accusations reported to the police during this period and it is similarly possible that there were false accusations that were never recanted and resulted in convictions. However Kanin warns against reading too much into his results: "Certainly our intent is not to suggest that the 41 percent incidence found here be extrapolated to other populations, particularly in light of our ignorance regarding the structural variables."[12]
