Rising oil prices force school to cancel lunches

Rising oil prices have forced a local elementary school to decide to cancel school lunches for two days in January, local education authorities said.

The Yokohama Municipal Board of Education sets the expenses for school lunches per elementary school child at 40,700 yen per year.

However, rising oil prices have pushed up the prices of ingredients for school lunches, making it extremely difficult for Yokohama Municipal Ekoda Elementary School in the city's Aoba-ku to keep expenses below that level unless it cancels lunches for a few days.

The school thus decided to cancel lunches and afternoon classes on Jan. 8 and 9 following winter vacation, officials said. The school notified students' parents of the decision last Saturday.

Couldn't they just not make fried foods for a few days?

That's about 200 yen per lunch??? Are they really that hard up?

Here's an idea. How about taking some of that kick-back money from school uniform suppliers and putting that towards the school lunch program?

talk about ケッチ. what is it with people here? they'll think nothing of forking over an absurd amount of cash for the most quotidien of items but balk about 200 yen here and there for something so basic.

personally though, i'd just as soon have them drop the school lunches altogether and let me have my kids bring their own lunch so i know they're not eating mercury-laden kujira-jiru.

Just to be clear - are they talking about cooking oil, or rising crude oil prices driving up the price of gasoline/delivery/food costs?

I know a number of people who do it in 2 prefectures, so I imagine it can't be that hard.

I know one person was specifically told they would need a note from a doctor and couldn't get a Japanese doctor to play along, so they got a note from their "family doctor in their home country" and translated it.
