Sweaty Ballz

Postby Big Booger » Fri May 02, 2003 2:27 pm

Just anticipating the horrendous Japanese heatwave that lasts three months.. reminds me of last year when I could feel the sweat from my ballz dripping..

How do you cope with the heat? Any suggestions?

From my site:
For less than 1000 yen, I have made external curtains for my two patio doors. These cut sunlight, which cuts heat. Since they are outside, the heat they cut stays outside. They also give a little more privacy. They are made of large sheets of gauze bought by the metre and are held up with stick-on hooks. If you use an air conditioner, keep the filter clean. This will save 3 to 5% or more in extreme cases. Also, if you keep the external unit shaded, it will save some power by keeping it cooler. - http://www.tokyotightwad.com/utilities.html

Finding the right clothes helps, too. I would be in hell were it not for my mesh top kayaking shoes.

But when all else fails... BEER, and plenty of it!

yeah,
About the clothes, cotten or synthetic? Which works best?

And shoes, I usually wear slippers at home, and sandals to work..

Curtains, i have a set, not homemade, but decent. It blocks the sun, and i have and air conditioner. But I was wondering about on the go, at work and so on?

Besides beer, what other refreshment seems to replenish the fluids the best? Pokari Sweat, Aquarius, Qoo, Nacchan?

I am really dreading the heat this year, I hear it supposed to be the worst in a long time.

I like cotton myself, but others say that synthetic wicks away sweat.

Big Booger wrote:Curtains, i have a set, not homemade, but decent. It blocks the sun, and i have and air conditioner.

The trick is that they are external curtains.

Big Booger wrote:But I was wondering about on the go, at work and so on?

That's the hard part. I have seen ice-pack vests - but that seems a little too goofy. My lame answer is that I don't go out much in the summer.

Big Booger wrote:Besides beer, what other refreshment seems to replenish the fluids the best? Pokari Sweat, Aquarius, Qoo, Nacchan?

Beer was a joke - I don't recommend it. You'll get dehydrated. Any of the drinks you mention are good. The best is probably water. If you've got a filter on your tap, you are almost sure to get better quality than the bottle French tap water that is for sale.

Big Booger wrote:I am really dreading the heat this year, I hear it supposed to be the worst in a long time.

I'm guessing that this is not your first summer in Tokyo. If it's any consolation, it gets easier every year.

This sounds a little strange, but it's true; I run for about 30 minutes in the mid-afternoon, an average of three times a week. Then take a cold shower.

I think it's the shock-acclimation proceedure. But after my body 'overheats', the rest of the day is no sweat.. 8) (Bad pun intended)

Oh, and loin cloths for around the house.

It's true! It really works. I've dubbed it 'shocklimation'.. But it's not for everyone. And tons of liquids are a must..

I used to do 4 hours a day of Aikido and would sweat like a... uh... something that sweats a lot. Then I would shower at the dojo, go home and shower again. Then go to work and sweat again like a... uh... you know.

What worked best for me was getting used to the climate over a period of several years, and most importantly getting a job that didn't require a suit or tie. But I don't think that is very helpful. Sorry.

Cold? Mine had air conditioning that was never on. Mine was Yoshinkan. If it was your too, we could swap cop-smacking (we trained the kidotai) and beer-drinking (hiriki no yosei practice) stories.

The one way I learned to beat the heat was reduce my weight and exercise in the heat.

Now summer doesn't phase me, but when I was about 20lbs overweight it was a crushing burden and I wilted and had no energy all summer.

DJEB, I'm talking about Northern Honshu in the winter.

The dojo would be COLD before anyone got there. Especially if no one got there early.

But no one mentioned the temperature. EVER. IF it was hot OR cold.

That sounds cold. The Yoshinkan gets Tokyo cold - in other words, not very. Summer is another story. I'd go through 2 or 3 dogis a day.

I hate the heat. I beg for Hokkaido weather, and if my wife would move there, that's where we'd be right now.

:D

Well it has been cool the past few days and rainy, but I am dreading those days when the wind is gone, and the heat is full on, with humidity hitting 120%.

natsu-bate cure

Postby GomiGirl » Mon May 12, 2003 2:39 pm

natsubate

Natsubate means summer heat-related fatigue, and the symptoms include lethargy, lack of appetite, weight loss. It is caused by the body's reaction to changes in temperature caused by going in and out of air condiotioned places. Natsubate usually occurs in the late summer or early autumn.

To prevent Natsubate, slow down your pace of life and get plenty of sleep. Next , don't let yourself get really thirsty, have small amount of liquids often. Unsweetened and non-carbonated
drinks are best. Try to eat well-balanced meals, have lots of different nutritious foods each day, even if it's just a small amount of each. Cold noodles are popular in summer, but because they don't have much protein or vegetables in them, eat some fruit ir something after the meal if you can. Also taking vitamin B1 is good for people who are doing physical work outside in the heat.

I love summer for the unagi

Grilled unagi is a delicacy in Japan, popular not only for its flavor but also for its stamina-giving properties. It's traditionally eaten during one of the hottest days of the summer (sometime in late July) to provide strength and vitality for the rest of the year.

but if it is vitamin B you want - you can't go past the good ol' Aussie Vegemite

Hey, nobody mentioned mugi-cha! The best damn summer-time drink there is. The first time I drank it, I swore off of carbonated beverages forever.

kamome! You are so right. When my girlfriend (now wife) introduced this to me. I drank glass after glass. The staff at the restaurant laughed about how much of it I drank.

I want some mugi cha now.

Another thing about Japan. My taste for sweet foods has diminished significantly. I don't like SWEET SWEET stuff so much anymore.

Pardon to all vegemite eaters in here.

But vegemite is some of the worst shite ever invented.

Looks like chocolate.....
.....tastes like sardines.

Well, thats extreme, but if you LOOK at it, you'd think it'd be sweet like chocolate and then you taste it, the combination of expectation combined with dissappointment and extreme saltiness makes the reaction......memorable.

Not bad stuff. Just bloody deceptive is all.

yeh, mugi cha really hit the spot in hot london..

but over here, my vote just has to go to kirin kiki cha!
and that blue bottle with some okinawa tea is good also..

i just cant for the life of me figure out why a small bottle of tea costs 140/50 yen and a 2 litre bottle costs 180 yen...

still since i switched to cold tea as my drink of choice, i`ve lost weight and feel better all round

thank you tea!

Temperatures have hit record highs in Japan as a heatwave swept through the country, leaving at least seven people dead over the last few days.

In Tajimi city, 400 km west of Tokyo, the mercury hit 40.9 degrees Celsius, topping the previous record of 40.8 logged in 1933, the Meteorological Agency said.

The thing the amazes me most is that no one here as ever heard of a heat advisory, given the deaths due to heat stroke seem to even outdo typhoons in the pointless death olympics.
