Families sue newspapers over stories of wartime killing contest

Relatives of two executed Imperial Japanese Army officers sued two newspapers Monday, demanding compensation over publications that said the duo competed against each other in killing Chinese soldiers in 1937....reported in 1937 that the two second lieutenants carried out "hyakunin giri," a contest to see who would be the first to slash 100 Chinese soldiers with their swords, while on their way to Nanjing.

I have seen many pictures of the Japanese atrocities in Naking and I have a few photo books as well. Very sad history. Some of the photos are like the one you posted and there is something I have never understood why the Chinese soldiers just sit there waiting to be decapitated? Why don't they run or fight back knowing that they will be killed either way.

My ancestors suffered a Genocide during WW1 around the Middle East and when I see photos or read books, I often wonder why they followed the Turkish (Kurdish) soldiers' orders and walked in the desert to their deaths.

This is why I have told my young son that he would get a serious spanking from me if he came home one day beaten-up by bullies at school and if the said bullies were still in full control of their legs. If someone beats you up you don't come home until his legs are broken.

Bullies aren't stupid... it's not like they go one on one with the victim. With the Japanese, I'm sure they had soldiers with guns making sure the victims didn't flee beforehand.

That was always my experience with bullies. See them alone, or when they are outnumbered and they are kittens.

I know there have been many heroic actions with Jews, Armenians, Chinese and others. But regardless, millions went away like sheep to be slaughtered. My point is if you are going to be killed anyway, why don't you fight? 'nough said. Perhaps it's easy for me to talk from the comfort of my living room.

In the situation these poor people were in, I wonder if I wouldn't be terrified beyond all rational thought. If not, I would be worried that my attempts at escape would, successful or not, result in some horrific punishment for my fellow prisoner.

I see what you mean, but I've read quite a bit about ijime, and the biggest problem these kids have is that they are so ashamed at being bullied that they tell no-one when they need help. Sometimes situations can become overwhelming. So your method could have a good outcome, encouraging him to stand up for himself, or a bad one if he can't handle the situation and will be too scared of your reaction to tell you.
