Tokyo Bananas

Does anyone know why Tokyo Bananas are supposed to be a souvenir of Tokyo? An American friend of mine who just left Tokyo told me he picked up "some of those famous Tokyo bananas" at Narita and it occurred to me that they really are only sold in places that sell souvenirs (stations, airports etc). According to the manufacturer's website, they first appeared in 1991 and were sold only at Haneda Airport so it seems that they were only ever souvenirs rather than something that was always popular with Tokyo people. You would think there must be something a bit more representative of Tokyo than banana cake.

I was wondering the same thing. A J friend of mine was visiting from out of town and wondering what kind of omiyage to take back. She started talking about "Tokyo Banana." I had never heard of them and was like, "WTF do bananas have to do with Tokyo?"

Well a japanese friend of mine who's actually living in England told me it was because of the joke...but Im not sure of that.:confused:

Bigger as in lengthwise or are you talking about the girth?
