
IHT: The house Kenzo built
The traditional façade of the Parisian apartment building gives little idea of the surprise that awaits behind its heavy lacquered doors. In the building's courtyard stands a large four-level structure, completely faced in teak, that is as extraordinary as its owner, the Japanese fashion designer Kenzo Takada. "My dream was to have a Japanese house and garden," said the soft- spoken designer, who built the 1,300 square-meter residence on the border of the Bastille and the Marais neighborhoods between 1987 and 1993 with the help of an architect partner and friend...Plump carp swim in a traditional rocky pond near a cherry tree that, even on a late November morning, is beginning to bud. On the far side of the pond, a Japanese-style pavilion is furnished with traditional tatami mats, with one room dedicated to the tea ceremony, another furnished with a low table for dining.
