If he did his T-4 training in '95 or '96 (he sounds older than that), then I would have met him, since all the fighter pilots did that training at the same base, and I had classes with all of them at some point.

Anyway, the rumors coming from the TV news are now that the second shooting victim, a male visitor who was getting a tour of the facilities before signing up as a member, was not only an acquaintance of the shooter, he was at the club at that time because the shooter had recommended he join Renaissance and scheduled an orientation tour for him.

Almost sounding now like the swim instructor was just a coincidental victim.

Had one woman scream when my cell phone went off, as I "was about to tear out her liver to sell it in China" (at least that is what I assume she was thinking when she screamed). I told her to not be such a racist as it made her look older than she was. She actually apologized. I think if you appeal to their vanity, it helps.

My favorite obasan move is when you sit down at a restaurant and the old bag sitting next to you moves her purse to her other side...even though it's a couple of arm lengths away. I'll give her credit, because this does make it much more difficult for me when I eventually do try to steal her purse.:ninja3:

I think the shooter was black.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

It had to be an FG because Japanese people are incapable of murder.
His [Brendan Behan's] last words were to several nuns standing over his bed, "God bless you, may your sons all be bishops."

If the "full-face helmet" he was wearing was black, then that might explain why there was supposedly "many" people claiming he was black.

If not, then they have no excuse.

The idea of a Japanese person following the crowd and not thinking for himself seems alien to you? Takechancrap. you're only re-enforcing the "all Japanese people are sheep" stereotype with comments like that.

Kyodo via Japan Today: Local officers reported gunman's possession of guns as 'no problem'
Police officers in Sasebo reported that possession of guns by the suspect in a deadly shooting rampage Friday posed no problem seven times over a period of about five years, sources close to the matter said Monday. Masayoshi Magome, 37, who allegedly killed two people and injured six before later killing himself, had won approval for possessing guns and renewals of his license by the prefecture's public safety commission seven times. Residents living near Magome's home had consulted with one local police officer over the man's possession of guns due to his behavior, but the officer apparently never did anything, the sources said. According to the residents, when Magome got the first shotgun, he started visiting other houses late at night, asking to use the bathroom or walking in the neighborhood with the gun in his hand. When a resident asked the local officer if it was okay to let him possess a gun and why he was given permission, the officer said, "We don't have to say why he is allowed to possess a gun"...more...

Looks like police took "preserving the wa" a little too far.

Japan faces up to a world of gun crime

Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007 / japantimes.co.jp
As is often the case with breaking news stories, the on-site, real-time television coverage of the shooting at the Renaissance Sports Club on the evening of Dec. 14 in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, was a flurry of vague incidentals and conflicting accounts.
The basic truth was stark enough to make an impression: A person dressed in camouflage-style clothing entered the club and started firing a gun, injuring several people, two of them seriously, and then fled into the night. Anything more specific was speculation....more...

Yomiuri: Police forces find 90 unfit gun owners
Ninety gun owners were ordered to return their gun licenses and 145 firearms as of Jan. 31, after being judged unfit to possess them under police inspections conducted in the wake of a shooting rampage in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, in December...The number of people ordered to turn in licenses is expected to increase as about 60 percent of gun owners have yet to be inspected. There were about 305,000 legally permitted shotguns and rifles and 34,000 air guns in the nation as of Jan. 31, 2006. The National Police Agency is compiling a list of problems with the current license system and says it will work to revise the law if necessary...The police finished checks on 133,914 registered guns owned by 65,767 people...So far, the police have judged 90 people not fit to possess guns and ordered them to return their licenses. Included are people the police have received reports on of stalking or using domestic violence on their partners...more...
