"But, on the other hand, it was also the time when women began insisting any men they would show interest in have the three 'highs' (a high income, a high academic background and height). This really polarized the situation, with men who'd be popular with women standing out above those who wouldn't be and probably did a lot to contribute to the high rate of virginity amongst 40-somethings now."
Ironically, in a Japan where the lack of sex between married couples has reached epidemic proportions, this same demographic producing so many virgins is also the same group with fewer sexless marriages than any other...more...

A Livedoor news article (Japanese) quotes that same figure from the Japan Family Planning Association about 10% of men in their forties never having had sex but also wonders about rumours of growing numbers of middle-aged women who are virgins. They decide to interview the sexless:

44-year-old Arai san, who works at a local ward office, feels he's missed his chance "I wouldn't mind having sex but no-one has ever asked me. I look like the kind of guy who isn't interested. A lot of my co-workers probably think I'm gay because it's a bit suspicious to work in local government and still be unmarried at my age". 43-year-old Miyazawa san works in the fruit and veg business and also has never known a woman "Every time my birthday come around, I think 'This year was no good either' and get depressed. I just didn't have the chance to meet girls when I was younger". The article says that while it might be relatively common for some men to wait until 20 before losing their virginity, it is more puzzling that these men should have reached their 40s and still not have had sex. Shiotani san is 47 and works in shipping and says "I just don't come into contact with girls. I'm not very confident about my looks but there are only other men in my business anyway. I've tried quite a few omiai but I always get turned down. I don't have any friends who would take me along to a sex club and I don't have the courage to go alone. I've never even really kissed a girl". Since he isn't even able to turn to the professionals for help, Shiotani might seem to be doomed to a life of celibacy but there is a glimmer of hope. He has recently met a woman his own age who works in a school lunch canteen. However, "It seems like she hasn't ever had sex either," he blushes. Noguchi san is in his late thirties "I've got sexual urges like anyone else but my only option is to jerk myself off," he says "I'm not against the idea of a fuzoku sex club but I've never been to one and don't know what to do and I wouldn't want to be embarrassed. My only "girlfriends" are porn stars. Since I work in a video store, at least I've got a lot of choice".

Columnist Chinami Shimizu believes that around one in four unmarried women in their thirties have never had sex. 38-year-old Kumiko is a good-looking woman with a senior position in her company where she heads a team of seven. She is still a virgin "To tell the truth, I had one experience with a tutor during my student days but just as we were about to do it, I got scared and ran away," she says "I still feel a bit frightened at the prospect now. If I have the chance to get married then I'd like that but it would be better if we didn't have to have sex". What shocked Kumiko during the encounter with her tutor was seeing his naked body and throbbing member. The kind gentle man she thought she knew seemed to become a raging monster. "People seem to change, it was all respectful and affectionate at first but when men get sexually excited, it's a real turn-off". Another woman, 38-year-old Marie has never been on a date. "I'm really shy and always run away if a man tries to chat me up. I've got no confidence in my looks too and so if I carry on like this I'll probably die a virgin," she sighs. Dr. Tomonobu Kawano, professor of psychosomatic medicine at Toyo Eiwa University, believes that women in particular can start to grow accustomed to a sexless life if they aren't getting any. "And that's as much true for married women as unmarried women". Can men also find themselves losing their urges if they don't have the chance have sex? "I don't believe that's a problem for men," says Dr Kawano.

I just heard on the radio the other night that there is this fairly credible study out there that shows people who don't manage to get laid by the time they're 21 suffer certain developmental issues regarding their sexuality.

It be interesting to know if being aroused by tentacle porn is one of the symptoms.

Yeah, I saw an article, too about ED and other problems with the plumbing occuring in those who waited until their mid-20's or beyond to have sex. We are programmed to reproduce early, like ferrets, only human females don't continue to build-up endometrial mass and get all infected and die if they aren't inseminated the first time an egg rolls down the tubes.
