Note: Since Hepatitis C is mostly spead in Japan by sex and is suddenly a lot more widespead than previously thought, HIV/Aids likely being vastly under-reported also.

Japan Confirms 30,000 New Cases of Hepatitis C
Tokyo, May 2 (Bloomberg)
...The number of people in Japan infected with hepatitis C may number 1.5 million, according to a ministry estimate, the report said, citing the ministry. Hepatitis C can be transmitted through blood transfusion, shared needles and sexual contact.

1.) Having in mind the population of Japan, 1.5 million Hepatitis C carriers (if considered accurate figure), should not be considered as an excessive number of people. In the U.S. and Europe, the percentage of Hepatitis C "infected" peeople relative to the general population, ranges from 0.5 % (rural areas) to 3% (bigger cities). In Maryland, for example, the percentage is about 2% (in jails it is about 10-15% ).

2.) Hepatitis C is *normally* NOT tranmitted via sex (unless sex practices with blood exchanges are involved: unprotected anal sex, sex during period, etc..). This virus is typically transmitted by sharing used needeles, tatoos, piercings, going to (not professional) dentists, etc....

I was alluding to the fact that in Japan drug-use needles sharing is rare and tatoos/piercings are still not common. However, bad dentists and quack HARI are the norm here. The vectors of Japanese Hepatitis C are still not well understood (some vectors in Japan are NOT being reported). I'd looove to know the-rest-of-the-story...
