As an ex-laboratory person - people do not take pleasure in euthanizing lab animals. It is unfortunately the only way to develop and test pharmaceuticals for human ailments - cancer, diabeties etc etc etc.

There are very strict rules in the handling of the animals and I have never seen any sadistic acts in the lab.

But with improved cell culture techniques, the use of animals has decreased dramatically in the last 20 years or so.

I cannot speak for the cosmetics industry as I have no first hand knowledge of that.

World's Smallest Seahorse Found

Canada,May 12, 2003 (ENS) - The world's smallest known species of seahorse, mistaken in the past for the offspring of another species of seahorse, has now been identified as a unique species. Adults of the new species, a pygmy seahorse known as Hippocampus denise, are typically just 16 millimeters long - smaller than most fingernails...both exporting and importing parties have taken out reservations, CITES [Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora] regulations need not be followed...Indonesia is a major exporter of seahorses, while Japan and South Korea are believed to be net importers. Their reservations could make it more difficult to ensure the long-term survival of some species of seahorses.
