Thank You For Being White

Postby Mulboyne » Fri Jan 04, 2008 6:49 am

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Over the last couple of days, NHK news has mentioned some recent results of surveys conducted by the NHK Broadcasting Culture Research Institute. In one, they gave people a list of 60 words and asked them to choose their favourite. The no.1 choice was "arigatou" (thank you) as it also was when a similar survey was conducted in 1983. The biggest change was for the word "doryoku" (effort) which dropped quite sharply, especially among younger people. If you click here, you can see links to the video report (Japanese). This morning, the same institute revealed the result of a survey on Japan's favourite colour. Just as in 1983, the top choice was "white" although the numbers choosing it this year fell from 58% to 40%. Second place was black, followed by blue, green (yes, yes) and 水青 which is a tricky one to translate but might be closest to pale blue or even turquoise depending what mood you are in. In 1983, second place was 空青 - "sky blue" - and third place was red which seems to have dropped out of the running this year and will probably become the subject of some sociological study. No link yet to that survey.
