Bloomberg: Shu Uemura, Japanese Makeup Artist, Dies of Pneumonia at 79
Shu Uemura, the Japanese makeup artist who parlayed a Hollywood reputation into a global chain of cosmetics stores, died of pneumonia on Dec. 29. He was 79. The death of the cosmetics pioneer was announced today in a statement by the company that bears his name. Uemura began his career in Hollywood in 1955, and his first break came during the filming of "My Geisha" starring Shirley MacLaine. MacLaine's makeup artist fell ill and Uemura was called to substitute. "Upon completion of Ms. MacLaine's intricate and laborious geisha makeup, Mr. Uemura had transformed the actress's Caucasian face into a Japanese geisha with Asian features," his biography says on the Shu Uemura Cosmetics Inc. Web site. He was the preferred artist for actors Frank Sinatra and Edward G. Robinson, according to the site. Uemura was the founder and the honorary chairman of Tokyo- based Shu Uemura Cosmetics, which became a subsidiary of Paris- based L'Oreal SA in 2004. The company has stores in Tokyo, Paris, New York and other major cities, according to the statement.

Sorry to be blunt, but "Died of pneumonia" sounds fishy ... isn't this just an euphemism for "died of AIDS"?

That's the first thing that came up in my mind when I read "died of pneumonia".

Died of pneumonia at 39 might be, but at 79 it's just plain old. Besides AIDS hasn't been killing Hollywood stars in quite the number they should be in recent years.

Some old folks who are bed ridden get pneumonia. Lack of mobility/exercise probably plays a big part.

There's a reason why pneumonia is called the old man's friend (due to fact it kills you off quickly if you are otherwise suffering from something killing you slowly). Santa brought me a nice case of pneumonia for Christmas, and I'm half that guy's age and in otherwise good health, and it kicked my ass for two weeks straight and took off 10 pounds in body weight the hard way. Even with antibiotics and tylenol, it took over six days to knock down and keep the fever down. It isn't a minor health event, and if you have other health problems, you can easily end up in a world of serious trouble pretty fast.
The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

Bye bye Mr Uemura.

Poor Kuang_Grade - I've been lucky to avoid it but have heard that pneumonia is not just a heavy cold - it's pretty full on to get it.

My mother nearly died from a serious case of pneumonia when I was about 11 years old. She was around 40 then, and was in the hospital for around 2 months time. Not just old people die from it.

I had viral pneumonia when I was in high school. Since it was viral there was nothing to do but ride it out. Missed about a month of school, lost about 15 pounds and was coughing up nasty shit for weeks after the fever went away.

Not a good time.
