Places to score mint?

Postby GomiGirl » Fri Jan 04, 2008 3:06 pm

Just the regular mint for drinks.

We have been mostly growing our own on our tiny balcony garden, but demand for the best mojitos in town has increased and winter has slowed the growth so our demand is outstripping our capacity for supply.

Needing to find a store convenient to Shinjuku where we can buy some but haven't had any luck so far.

Suggestions???

Sorry. Can't help you. Have you tried the Iranians? :p

We really need fresh mint but am going to get some of the dried stuff from this site as back-up. Thanks for the post.

None of the usual places like Shinonoya or Yamaya or supermarkets carry it. Sadly.

Hire my greenhouses to grow it.
We grow strawberries in the winter and could start one or two hydroponic trays (3-8 meters) of mint just for you.

GomiGirl, you spammer! Did you say "bar"? :-)

Well, the online shops seem to be a good idea.

But also, Mrs. Omae Mona says your neighborhood depachika should definitely have it (Isetan may be the closest to http://arakubar.jp/, oops). She's sure she's seen it recently in the herbs corner at Tokyu Foodshow underneath Shibuya-eki if you are willing to travel a few stops, but you shouldn't need to go that far.

We periodically buy fresh mint for the same reason as you (mojitos), so that's the only reason we have any experience!

Haven't tried Isetan yet but will do - mainly to see how much they are going to charge.... it is the most expensive place in the world to shop for what I would consider a staple.

Mint grew wild in my backyard where I grew up so I've never gotten used to paying for it in Japan. Like all herbs it's outrageously expensive here - about 400 yen for a few sprigs. I use it for my couscous salad and get it from the local supermarket 'new ale'? (ニュ-エイル?) I forget the spelling.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

I checked your original message. OK, technically, you used the word "we", not "bar" as I originally said. I think that's quite bad enough. Spammer. You should disavow all intent to provide mojitos on a commercial basis. :-)

Seriously, though, you are probably right about the mint price. I am not sure what kind of quantity you are buying. But I was guessing shipping costs from online vendors could actually make Isetan competitive, if you just stop by on foot while walking toward the Business-That-Can-Not-Be-Named. If you're in the Shinjuku-eki area, of course Odakyu and Keio also have basements that may be more reasonably priced. Oh, and the Mitsukoshi on shinjuku-dori might also be a candidate.

If I recall, your NSFW put together a terrific mojito for me last time I was in the you-know-what, so let me know when the supplies are ready so I can stop by again!

We serve them every night but only until we run out of mint. Really depends on how many thirsty punters are in.

Our poor little supply plants are really a bit grim from daily harvesting. They went off over summer but that is of course also peak season for fruity minty cocktails too.

The NSFW really mixes the best mojito around. I have been taste testing them all over the city to compare just to be confident of such a bold statement.. (well that is my excuse)

Omae mona! You should be ashamed. You have turned into a worst spammer than the un-speakable Gomi! By reference to the bar and the Business-That-Can-Not-Be-Named, you are probably in gross violation of spammer laws, rules, regulations and a couple more Google policy letters and inter-office memos. You need to go here to the Banned Website List and enter your user name and password to confess your sins to the board and the world in general

Bless me Father, for I have sinned. Fortunately The Banned Website List is open until 5 AM (according to http://The Banned Website List/access.html), so I should still have time to do penance today.

I also promise not to post any links to viagra, penis enlargement, replica watches, or quick weight loss sites.

No sweat. I knew there were shops on there that sold mint leaves, because I ran across them when searching for something else a while ago.

Found a real live grocery store in Kabukicho that sells mint. We were drinking at a bar the other night in the area and asked them where they got theirs from. Not as good as growing it ourselves but it is still mint and it will suffice for the present.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Taro - am still interested in doing something with your farm as we prefer a certain type of mint for our world famous mojitos. :)

This thread reminds me of my Christmas-break last month, when I went back to my hometown and visited an absolute shit-hole of a bar that an old friend had imprudently purchased. I asked my friend, who was tending bar, for a Mojito, to which he replied "Sure, just let me go out back to pick some fresh mint from my herb garden, you faggot."

I try to mind my surroundings a bit more now...
