VoIP for the iPod Touch.

Postby Phoenix_stu » Wed Jan 09, 2008 5:36 pm

With the newest discovery of the Audio Line in on the iPod touchImage by the Touchmods team and their new SIP-VOIP application. It is now possible to make VOIP calls over any local WiFi network.

Well, I am now the proud owner of a custom handcrafted official Touchmods mic.
I have to say that it is a beauty. I am pleased to have it and it works great!!! AND it arrived in just 3 days.
Before anyone starts complaining about why they haven't received theirs yet. . . I ordered my way before they decided to take the 500 pre orders. Be patient guys, your will come soon.

If this is your first time to hear about it go to the Touchmods site here and check em out.

Thanks alot Touchmods team. Here is a pic.

I also made a short video of it as well. Hope you enjoy the vid.

Nice, Stu. Which provider are you using?

VoipBuster. here

You really do not need to download the software. Just register for an account.

EDIT:

Maybe I should also point out that you would need to have a "jailbroken" ipod touch in order to be able to install this application.

Also here is a list of working providers for this application.

I forget who are the top providers in Tokyo now. There were several WiFi providers test marketing in Tokyo-Yokohama a couple of years ago.

Nowadays what are the better deals? I hear that NTT docomo mzone only costs 350 yen a month but you have subscription with docomo mobile (which defeats the whole purpose). Softbank has a cheap WiFi plan too. I only use WiFi when I find a seat somewhere, so I just keep a mental map of where my favorite open WiFi connections are located....But what do you other folks do?

Hi ya Taro, long time no talk.

Well, that is something that I am curious about as well.
I just jumped on the bandwagon and am currently using VoipBuster with the free minutes. At the moment I haven't paid anything and I believe get 300 min free a week. After that I will have to pay. I haven't really looked into it too much yet.
I would like to find more details about the providers here though.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but can anybody help me with my Ipod touch. I have read and reread the Apple forums and cannot get a straight answer on this. And I think I may be an idiot for not figuring it out, but here goes.
I want to change my password for my email account. I go to setting, mail and calendars, go to my account with the correct email address, and then try to change my password. Each time it accepts it says it is confirming, and then when I go back to check, it is back to the original one.
THis then always gives me an error when I try to sync my Ipod touch that it cannot connect since I have the wrong password. Please tell me what I am doing wrong! Thanks for the help.

How can you see that it has gone back to the old password? The password field is all dots so you can't see what is there.

If the account is one where the email is kept on the server and sync'd to your phone (Mobile Me, Exchange, Gmail, Yahoo, etc) then I suggest just deleting the account from the phone and creating a new one. If all the mail is actually getting downloaded into your phone then you can't do this without losing your email (unless you back it up first of course).

Even if you can't delete the account and recreate it, I would make a duplicate account and see if that works. If that fails then I suspect you may either have the wrong server settings or be entering the wrong password into the email settings.

It is a Yahoo account, and the reason Lurker I say I can see that the password hasn't changed is that the old password was only 7 dots long and the new one much longer. Not sure how scientific that is, but that is what I was going by. I tried to delete the account and start again, but it would not allow me to do so. I will keep trying, but it is annoying nonetheless.

Yeah, in that case you can count the dots to tell.

What happens when you click the big red DELETE ACCOUNT button for that account?

If you can't delete the account or change the password then I am guessing that the file that holds your account details has become corrupt. If your iPod Touch has been jailbroken you can probably go in and delete the settings file itself (or even better, rename it) but if not then I suspect there is no way to fix the problem apart from doing a complete wipe and restore of the device. Just reinstalling the OS won't help as it keeps the data files intact when you do that.
