JAL Attempts To Reassure Passengers

Following a series of problems with maintenance, JAL has begun putting up signs at the boarding gate showing the name and photo of the man in charge of the team preparing the plane. In English, the sign reads "Please enjoy our 'safe' and 'comfortable' flight". Those inverted commas are a bit of a worry.

Is that so your family knows who to sue when you die in a ball of flames?

I think this is a very good idea. Gives a bit of credit to the people involved you don't normally get to see as pax.

Maybe they should put the country up there where the plane had its last CD-check as well... ;)

Japanese find concepts like punctuation puzzling.
After too many years of checking Japanese company documents written in engrish, I noticed that Japanese love to think that quotation marks can be used instead of boldface for emphasis. Charmingly in this case, the meaning of ironic quotation marks makes, "enjoy our 'safe' and 'comfortable' flight" a lot more fun than intended.:nice:

Well that is 'interesting'. I'm 'sure' I will have to 'think' about 'that' in the future.

You know the frightening thing is that they are bound to have at least some EFL staff and they couldn't be bothered to actually ask any of them to look at the sign before it was displayed. I find all of this very reassuring (to my job prospects)
